Wildcats Compete at Raleigh Relays

RALEIGH, N.C. – The University of New Hampshire track and field teams traveled down to NC State for the annual Raleigh Relays to kick off their 2018 outdoor track season.
Nine wildcats traveled down to North Carolina to begin their outdoor track season getting some much needed outdoor time in before the spring weather arrives in Durham.
Several men's throwers competed in the shot put, discus, and hammer, with a majority competing in the hammer on Saturday.
Senior Michael Shanahan (Dover, N.H.) continued his impressive season breaking yet another school record, winning the hammer throw with a best distance of 223 feet, 4 inches. The throw ranks eighth in the nation so far, and breaks his old school record of 214'10" which was set in 2016. Shanahan also competed in the discus on Friday and finished 28th with a throw of 129'3".
Sophomore Zachary Astle (Newbury, N.H.) also competed in two throwing events on the weekend; he placed seventh in the shot put with a throw of 52'0.75", the highest finish of any Wildcat at the event. The throw misses his personal best in the event by just 3'2.5". Astle's highest finish came in the discus with a throw of 154'9", putting him in 10th place in the event. The mark just misses his personal best of 156'2.75" by about two feet.
Senior Nicholas Ritzo (Rye, N.H.) took 14th in the shot put with a final throw of 48'6.75", and took 16th in the discus with 147'. Juniors Jon Chapman (Newport, R.I.) and Eric Brogioli (Milford, Mass.) placed 10th and 12th in the hammer respectively; Chapman threw 175'8" and Brogioli threw 173'8". Sophomore Edward Speidel (Dover, N.H.) and senior Cullen Aubin (Warwick, R.I.) rounded out the hammer throw 15th and 19th respectively. Speidel threw 165'10" and Aubin threw 158'2".
The women's team sent two athletes down to North Carolina: Senior thrower Emily Wernig (Gilford, N.H.) competed in the discus and hammer throws. On Friday she threw 111'9" in the discus for a 35th overall finish, and on Saturday in the hammer she threw 154'3" and placed 25th. Wernig's personal best in the hammer is 157'9.5".
The lone Wildcat track runner in the meet, sophomore Meg Champagne (Plattsburgh, N.Y.) finished 14th in her heat in the 5000m with a time of 17 minutes, 37.99 seconds. Champagne finished 86th overall.
