Storey, Soucy Lead 'Cats to Upset Win Over Holy Cross

DURHAM, N.H. – Junior forward Ashley Storey (Cumberland, Maine) tallied a career-high 23 points with a career-high three made three-pointers, and junior Caroline Soucy (Beverly, Mass.) notched her first career double-double as the University of New Hampshire women's basketball team knocked off the Holy Cross Crusaders, winning its third straight home game, 74-62, on Sunday in Lundholm Gymnasium.
The Wildcats head on the road for a matchup at Central Connecticut State on Sunday, Dec. 16, at 1 p.m. They then return home for consecutive home games. They play Dartmouth in an Education Day game Friday, Dec. 21 at 11 a.m. and face Princeton on Saturday Dec. 29 at 1 p.m.
Before Sunday's game, award-winning journalist Jackie MacMullan, a captain of the UNH basketball team in the 1981-82 season, signed copies of her latest book, "Basketball: A Love Story," in the lobby of Lundholm and appeared on AmericaEast.TV to discuss her new book.
The Wildcats improved to 3-7 for the season with Sunday's win. They are 3-1 at home and have won their last three games in Lundholm.
Head coach Maureen Magarity moved into a tie for the No. 3 spot on UNH's career list with the win. She has 133 wins, which ties her with Sue Johnson. Cecilia DeMarco is at No. 2 with 136 victories.
Holy Cross falls to 6-3 on the season and had its win streak snapped at five.

The Wildcats head on the road for a quick road trip at Central Connecticut, but return home for two more home games to close out December, playing Dartmouth at home on Friday, Dec. 21 at 11 a.m. and close out the calendar year with a game against Princeton on Saturday, Dec. 29 at 1 p.m.
Central Connecticut has a 2-5 record on the season and is coming off a 60-53 victory over Albany.
December 21 is Education Day at Lundholm Gym.

HIGHLIGHTS
The Wildcats played tough defense and also had their best shooting and rebounding game of the season.
Sophomore Maggie Ahearn (Marshfield, Mass.) added a double-double, her second of the season and her career, to the UNH cause with 12 points and 11 rebounds, and freshman Kari Brekke (Appleton, Wisc.) contributed nine points and a career-high eight assists.
The Wildcats made 26 of their 55 field goals for a season's-best 47.3 percent.
Better yet, they made 10 of their 16 three-pointers for 62.5 percent.
Storey and Soucy each made a career-high three shots from behind the three-point line. Storey made all thee of her three-pointers.
UNH had its best rebounding margin of the season with 43 to 27 for the Crusaders.
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Wildcats came out strong with 5-of-12 shooting in the first quarter, trading blows with Holy Cross and ending the first quarter down 16-13.
Holy Cross opened up the second quarter on a 10-2 run to extend its lead to lead by eight points halfway through the quarter. The Wildcats responded with a 8-0 run of their own led by Ahearn, Soucy, and Brekke to cut the Holy Cross lead to 27-26 at the two-minute mark of the second quarter. A three-pointer from Soucy put that run to 11-0 to give UNH its first lead since the first quarter.
The Crusaders owned a 31-29 halftime lead.
The Crusaders extended their to four in the third period, but Wildcats responded with the sixth tie of the game on a three-pointer from Brekke with 5:49 to go in the third. The Wildcats did not allow a Holy Cross lead of more than one point for the rest of the game and they led going into the final quarter, 51-45.
UNH surged in the fourth, outscoring Holy Cross 23-17 in the final frame, leading by as much as 14, with Soucy hitting two key three-pointers to keep the Wildcat lead safe. A big 13-3 run by the Wildcats that began with six minutes left in the quarter sealed the victory.
