UNH Skates to 1-1 Tie at #10 Providence

van Riemsdyk scores shorthanded goal and Robinson makes 32 saves
DURHAM, N.H. – Junior forward Brendan van Riemsdyk (Middletown, N.J.) tied the game with his first collegiate shorthanded goal and sophomore goalie Mike Robinson (Bedford, N.H.) made 32 saves as the University of New Hampshire men's hockey team tied No. 10 Providence, 1-1, at Schneider Arena on Friday night in Hockey East action. The Wildcats, who are 1-0-2 in their last three games, are now 2-6-5 overall (1-3-3 Hockey East), while the Friars are 7-4-3 overall (4-2-1 Hockey East).

HOW IT HAPPENED
- The Friars took an early lead just 20 seconds after the opening faceoff when Jason O'Neill sent a shot from the side of the goal that found the back of the net.
- After the first period, the Friars led the Wildcats 1-0. Providence outshot UNH 15-6, and each team went 0-2 on the power play.
- The Wildcats tied the game 1-1 at 7:24 of the second period when junior forward Liam Blackburn (Prince George, British Columbia) sent a backhanded pass to van Riemsdyk on a two-on-one as van Riemsdyk fired a one-timer from the faceoff circle to the upper glove side of the net for a shorthanded goal.
- With 3:00 left on the clock in the second period, Providence almost took the lead when Greg Printz ripped a shot from the slot that ricocheted off the pipe.
- Going into the third period, the game remained tied 1-1. In the second period, the Friars outshot the Wildcats 8-7. UNH also went 0-1 on the power play, while Providence went 0-2.
- Robinson kept the Friars from taking the lead with a big glove save against a shorthanded breakaway by Ryan Tait, keeping the score at 1-1 2:14 into the period.
- Neither team was able to score in the third period, each taking nine shots, before the game went into overtime with the score still tied 1-1.
- Neither team was able to score a game-winner in overtime as the game ended in a 1-1 tie.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
- Providence outshot UNH by 33-24.
- Robinson made 32 saves for the Wildcats, while Hayden Hawkey made 23 for the Friars.
- The Wildcats went 0-5 on the power play and the Friars went 0-4.
BEYOND THE BOXSCORE
- van Riemsdyk's shorthanded goal was the first of his collegiate career.
- The last UNH shorthanded goal was on Dec. 30, 2016 when Shane Eiserman scored in the 6-4 win versus Maine.
- Blackburn is now on a three-game point streak, with one goal and two assists for three points.
- The Wildcats only allowed one goal versus the Friars, who entered averaging 3.62 goals per game, which was the second highest in the league.
- Seven of the 13 games this season and five of the last seven have gone to overtime. The Wildcats are 1-1-5 in those games, which included a 3-2 win versus Vermont at the Whittemore Center on Oct. 27. The most overtime games played in a season for UNH is 12 in 2009-2010. The most ties in a season is 7, also in 2009-2010.
- All but three of the Wildcats' 13 games this season have been either a tie or decided by one goal. Four of the team's six losses have been decided by one goal.
- This game against No. 10 Providence was the fourth straight contest versus a nationally ranked team for UNH. The Wildcats are now 1-2-2 versus ranked teams this season.
