Rudert's Shutout and Danahy's Goal Lift 'Cats Past #17 Albany
10/26/2018 5:43:00 PM | Field Hockey
DURHAM, N.H. – Isabelle Danahy (Chelmsford, Mass.) scored in the 24th minute and Kelsey Rudert (North Grafton, Mass.) recorded her first career shutout to lift the University of New Hampshire field hockey team to Friday afternoon's 1-0 win against 17th-ranked University at Albany at Memorial Field.
Rudert's sixth and final save came with no time remaining in the game on a UAlbany penalty corner. Frederike Helmke fired a low shot from the top-right side through traffic, but the UNH senior goalkeeper extended her right leg to make a kick save that directed the ball across the end line to end the game.
UAlbany goalie Melissa Nealon was credited with three saves.
UNH improves to 5-11 overall and 3-5 in America East. With the victory, the Wildcats still have a chance to advance to the conference tournament. They need UMass Lowell to lose to the University of Maine on Sunday.
UAlbany, which entered the game on a five-game win streak, is now 12-4, 5-2. The Great Danes had won each of the last three games by shutout, including the last two against nationally-ranked Maine and University of Louisville.
"I think this was a typical Albany versus UNH game," UNH head coach Robin Balducci said. "It's a chess match. Low scoring. Low shooting. It's a battle for 70 minutes. They came at us at the end but we held on.
"Rachel Bossi stepped up in big moments and Kelsey made a big save at the end," Balducci added. "Our core players played well. We talked about playing to win. We came out and did that. Now, hopefully this gives us good momentum the rest of the season."
NEXT GAME
UNH concludes the regular season Oct. 28 at home against intrastate rival Dartmouth College. The five Wildcat seniors will be honored prior to the 2 p.m. start.
