DURHAM, N.H. - Junior Gaby Dorsey (Hubertus, Wis.) scored the first half-goal as the University of New Hampshire women's soccer team opened up the regular season with a 2-0 victory over the LIU Brooklyn Blackbirds Friday evening at Bremner Field.
The Wildcats had a strong showing on the shot chart as they outshot the Blackbirds 14-5 in the first half, 26-8 overall.
Dorsey's goal was the lone action in the first half, as she got a cross from senior Veronica Hardy (North Smithfield, R.I.) who sent the ball into the center of the box from the right wing. Dorsey met the ball with her head, and put it past the opposing keeper on the right-side post to give New Hampshire the 1-0 lead 15:43 into the first half.
New Hampshire had the only corner kick in the first half, and led the second half corner kick count by a tally of 7-2.
The Wildcats would tally a late insurance goal as Hardy found senior Brooke Murphy (Monson, Mass.) who slid through the box on a long thru-ball that would find its way past LIU goalkeeper Aline Allmann, giving UNH a 2-0 lead 80 minutes, 30 seconds into the game. Sophomore Kaylan Williams (Marion, Ind.) started the play finding Hardy on the back pass.
A strong defensive hold by New Hampshire limited the Blackbirds to just three shots in the second half, making things easy for senior goalkeeper Mia Neas (OId Saybrook, Conn.) who only needed to make four saves on the evening for her first career victory in her first career start. LIU's Allmann finished with 15 saves.
The Wildcats continue their homestand this Sunday, August 20th at 2 p.m. as they welcome Sacred Heart to Bremner Field.
