#13 Wildcats Fall to #9 Providence, 5-2

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Erik Foley and Vimal Sukumaran each tallied two goals for the Friars, while sophomore Brendan van Riemsdyk (Middletown, N.J.) and junior Marcus Vela (Burnaby, B.C.) scored for the Wildcats as No. 13 University of New Hampshire men's hockey team fell to No. 9 Providence, 5-2, on Friday evening at Schneider Arena.

- The Wildcats return home tomorrow night, when they conclude the weekend series versus Providence College at 7:00 p.m. at the Whittemore Center. Saturday's game will be "Hockey For The Holidays." HOW IT HAPPENED
- Providence opened the scoring early at 1:01 of the first period as Kasper Bjorkqvist slapped a backhander from the right circle that found the back of the net to give Providence a 1-0 lead.
- The Wildcats responded at 17:52 of the first period as sophomore Liam Blackburn (Prince George, B.C.) sauced a pass from behind the net to van Riemsdyk, who was waiting below the face-off dot, and his wrist shot beat Hayden Hawkey on the blocker side to even the score at 1-1. Freshman Charlie Kelleher (Longmeadow, Mass.) also tallied an assist on van Riemsdyk's goal.
- The Friars outshot the Wildcats 10-9 in the first period.
- Providence added another early tally less than a minute into the second period as Erik Foley ripped a wrist shot from the right circle that beat senior goaltender Danny Tirone (Trumbull, Conn.) on the blocker side to give PC a 2-1 lead.
- With 39.9 seconds remaining in the second period, Providence extended their lead to 3-1 as Sukumaran fired a wrist shot from the slot that beat Tirone on the blocker side. Foley tallied an assist on the goal.
- Providence outshot UNH 15-4 in the second period.
- At 4:03 of the third period Foley added his second goal of the contest to give Providence a 4-1 lead with a slap shot from the point. Jacob Bryson and Brian Pinho each recorded assists on the goal.
- With 8:16 remaining in the third period, Vela fired a wrist shot from the left circle that beat Hawkey high on the blocker side and cut the PC lead to 4-2. Freshman Max Gildon (Plano, Texas.) and senior Cameron Marks (North Vancouver, B.C.) added the assists.
- With 3:43 remaining in the game, Sukumaran added his second goal of the night as Robbie Hennessey sent a pass from the boards which found him in front of the goal and he beat freshman Mike Robinson (Bedford, N.H.) to give Providence a 5-2 lead.
- Neither team found the back of the net in the final minutes as the Friars secured the 5-2 victory.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
- PC outshot UNH, 38-22.
- The Wildcats went 0-2 on the power play, while the Friars went 0-4.
- Tirone made 26 saves and Robinson made seven while Hawkey posted 20.
- Robinson made his collegiate debut during the third period.
