The ‘Cats Face the Huskies in Home and Home Series

The Wildcats will host Friday night at 7 p.m, the Huskies host Sunday at 2 p.m.
DURHAM, N.H. - The University of New Hampshire women's ice hockey team starts the month of December with a home and home series with Hockey East foe Northeastern. This comes after a winless week for the 'Cats, losing to #10 Providence College on Wednesday evening 3-0, and to Harvard on Saturday 5-3.
The Matchup: Northeastern vs. UNH
These two teams have already met once this year at Matthews Arena in Boston; Northeastern was ranked #7 in the nation when they defeated UNH 4-1 in the mid-October matchup. In the all-time series, UNH leads with a 80-48-9 record. Despite that, Northeastern has held the advantage in recent years, winning 18 of the last 21 matchups. UNH's last win in the series was on Jan. 6, 2017 when the Wildcats took an overtime victory in Matthews Arena 3-2.
The State of New Hampshire
• The Wildcats finished the month of October with a 5-1-2 record through eight games; it's their best start through eight games since 2010-11, when the Wildcats were 6-2-0.
• The month of November saw a tougher schedule with three ranked opponents, with the Wildcats only tallying one win on the month with a 1-4-3 overall record.
• UNH has scored the first goal in 12 of 16 games this season; they are 5-3-4 in those games.
• The Wildcats are 5-1-0 when scoring three or more goals, and 1-4-5 when scoring less than three goals. Their first loss when scoring three goals or more came against Harvard, who defeated the Wildcats 5-3.
• UNH is 6-3-3 when scoring at least once on the power play, 0-2-2 when scoring zero.
• New Hampshire is 5-1-5 when holding opponents to less than three goals; only five times this season have opponents scored three or more goals (1-4-0 UNH record in those games.)
Last Time Out
The Wildcats traveled to Harvard on Saturday, Nov. 25 and found themselves down by a goal after tallying the first strike of the game. The Wildcats came back to tie it twice in the second period, but the Crimson put the game away in the third period, scoring two goals in the final 10 minutes of regulation. Goals were scored by Meghara McManus (Milton, Mass.), Devan Taylor (North Billerica, Mass.) and Amy Schlagel (Blaine, Minn.). Freshman goaltender Ava Boutilier (Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island) tallied a career-high 17 saves in the second period, on her way to making 35 saves in the contest.
Players to Watch
• Senior defensemen Amy Schlagel and Julia Fedeski (Algonquin Highlands, Ontario) were both drafted to NWHL teams this offseason, Schlagel going 18th overall to the Buffalo Beauts, and Fedeski going 20th overall to the Boston Pride.
• Fedeski is one of two Wildcats with 11 points on the season (5g, 6a). All five of her goals have come on the power play. Most recently, Fedeski assisted on Sasaki's first career goal against Vermont.
• Schlagel has now tallied at least one point in five of the last nine games. She now has nine points on the season on six goals, three assists.
• Sophomore forward Meghara McManus is tied for the team lead with 12 points on six goals, six assists; she had her first career five-point game against Dartmouth with one goal and four assists.
• Sophomore forward Taylor Wenczkowski (Rochester, N.H.) also has a team-high 12 points; she is also tied for the lead in assists with eight, and has four goals on the season.
• Sophomore Carlee Turner (Scottsdale, Ariz.) is at 11 points after tallying an assist at RPI; She has five goals and six assists. She scored her first power play goal of the season against Vermont.
• Sophomore Nicole Dunbar (Coto de Caza, Calif.) is now up to ten points on the season with four goals and six assists. Dunbar had the game-winning goal against Holy Cross.
• Sophomore Tori Howran (Bancroft, Ontario) also has nine points and is tied for the team lead in assists with eight. She scored her first career goal against Holy Cross.
• Senior captain Carlee Toews (Grand Prairie, Alberta) has tallied eight points on two goals, six assists this season. She had the game-winning goal against Dartmouth on Oct. 22.
Boutilier Gets the Start
Freshman goaltender Ava Boutilier has gotten the start in every UNH game so far this season; she has a 6-5-5 record in her first 16 career starts, stopping 451 shots and allowing 35 goals. She has a .930 save percentage an a 2.14 GAA in her first career season.
Scouting Northeastern
The Huskies (Boston, Mass.) are coming off a two-win weekend at the D.C. tournament, defeating #1 Wisconsin 3-2 and Minnesota State 6-1. Most recently, the Huskies lost at Boston College on Tuesday evening, 7-3, to put their overall record at 9-8-2, and their Hockey East record to 5-5-1. The Huskies are 3-5-1 on the road this season.
Northeastern is led by senior forward McKenna Brand, who leads the team in goals with 10 and in points with 17, adding in seven assists. Fellow senior forward Denisa Krížová follows close behind on 15 points and eight assists. Junior forward Tori Sullivan leads the team in assists with nine; she has also scored two goals for a total of 11 points.
In net, the Huskies have gone to junior Brittany Bugalski, who has a 6-5-1 record and has started 13 of Northeastern's 19 games this season. She has a save% of .899 and GAA of 2.76. In the other six games, the Huskies have gone to freshman Aerin Frankel who has a 3-3-1 record with two shut outs. She enters the weekend with a .944 save% and 1.78 GAA.
