THE LEAD: Sophomore forward Liam Blackburn (Prince George, British Columbia) scored two goals for the Wildcats as the University of New Hampshire men's hockey team defeated No. 5 UMass Lowell, 3-1, at the Whittemore Center on Saturday evening. With the win, the Wildcats complete a two-game sweep against the River Hawks, and start the season 2-0-0.

HOW IT HAPPENED
- The River Hawks struck first, scoring at 14:08 of the first period as Kenny Hausinger scored right off the faceoff, blasting a wrist shot on the high stick side, giving UML a 1-0 lead.
- The Wildcats tied the game at 1:32 of the second period. Shortly after their power play ended, Blackburn received a pass from behind the net, courtesy of freshman Benton Maass (Elk River, Minn.) and scored, making it a 1-1 game. Junior forward Chris Miller (Windham, N.H.) recorded an assist on the play.
- The River Hawks took a too many men penalty at 7:31, and the Wildcats scored on the ensuing power play. Sophomore defensemen Anthony Wyse (Newton, Mass.) was left all alone on the blue line, then rocketed a slap shot into the net at 9:22 of the second period, tying the game at 1-1. Seniors Cameron Marks (North Vancouver, British Columbia)and Shane Eiserman (Newburyport, Mass.) both contributed assists on the play.
- At 7:09, during 4-on-4 play, Blackburn scored his second goal of the game. After junior forward Ara Nazarian (Boxford, Mass.) took a shot, Blackburn picked up the rebound and ripped it into the net, giving UNH a 3-1 lead, which the Wildcats maintained for the 3-1 victory.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
- UMass Lowell outshot the Wildcats, 33-24.
- Senior assistant captain Danny Tirone (Trumbull, Conn.) made 32 saves, while Tyler Wall tallied 21 for UMass Lowell.
- The Wildcats went 1-4 on the power play, while the River Hawks went 0-3.
- UNH won 30 faceoffs against UMass Lowell's 23.
BEYOND THE BOXSCORE:
- Wyse's game-winner was the second goal of his career, and his second game-winning goal. His first came on February 10, 2017, in a 4-2 victory at No. 14 Vermont.
- Tirone's win was the 40th of his career.
- The last time the Wildcats played a Hockey East team to open the season was in 2011 against Boston University.
