Purrier of Women’s Track Secures Third at the NCAA Championship in the Mile

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – Sophomore Elinor Purrier (Montgomery, Vt.) of the University of New Hampshire women's track & field team placed third overall in the mile run with a time of 4:38.42 at the 2016 NCAA Indoor Track & Field Championships at the CrossPlex Saturday afternoon.
Purrier recorded the best finish in the NCAA championships in program history for All-American status, her third honor. Purrier is the only track athlete to earn All-American status in both indoor and outdoor seasons.

Purrier held the top spot for the finals after placing 4:36.15 in the preliminaries yesterday afternoon.
"We are really proud of how she handled the moment," said head coach Robert Hoppler. "She competed the whole race and pushed herself and we are very excited on the growth she has shown thus far."
The sophomore went into the championships seeded first overall holding the top collegiate time at 4:29.71 which was the eighth fastest time ever recorded after just missing the mark her freshman season with a 15th place finish in the mile run. During the 2015 outdoor season, the sophomore competed at the NCAA Outdoor championships in the 3,000-meter steeplechase and finished seventh overall (9:53.69) for All-American status. She has placed herself in the discussion as one of the top runners in the country as a sophomore. Purrier finished the 2016 indoor season with three school records in the mile, 1,000-meter run (2:46.02) and the distance medley relay (11:28.56).
