Storey's Career-High 22 Points Lead Women's Basketball Past Binghamton

Durham, N.H. – Freshman forward Ashley Storey (Cumberland, Maine) poured in 22 points to crush her previous career high and senior Elizabeth Belanger (Acton, Mass.) contributed her fifth double-double of the season to lead the UNH women's basketball team to a 64-49 win over Binghamton at Lundholm Gymnasium on Saturday afternoon.
The Wildcats avenged an earlier loss to Binghamton and started off the second half of its America East portion of the schedule with the triumph. UNH is 8-14 overall and 2-7 in the league. Binghamton fell to 12-11 and 5-5.
NEXT UP
The Wildcats hit the road for two games next week against the league leaders. They play at second-place Maine on Monday night at 7 and at first-place Albany on Thursday at noon. The next UNH home game is against Stony Brook on Sunday, Feb. 14 at 1 p.m. Tickets for that and all home games are available at 603-862-4000 extension 5.
HIGHLIGHTS
- Storey was immense. Her previous high was nine points. She made 10 of her 12 field goals and both of her free throws. She also blocked two shots and had a steal.
- Belanger scored 19 points and had 12 rebounds and three assists.
- UNH lost its conference opener at the buzzer at Binghamton, 51-50, on Jan. 9.
- It was Alumni Day for the women's team and about three dozen former Wildcats were introduced at halftime.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Storey scored UNH's first six points of the game and had eclipsed her career-best outing by halftime with 12 points. She scored on inside moves, foul line jumpers and other assorted shots during the game.
Sophomore guard Aliza Simpson (Londonderry, N.H.) added 11 points and four rebounds and led the Wildcats with four assists. Sophomore forward Carlie Pogue (Cincinnati, Ohio) had 10 rebounds and four points.
The Wildcats owned a 17-15 lead after one period and opened things up in the second by outscoring the Bearcats, 17-6.
The Wildcats had buzzer beaters to end the second and third periods. Simpson scored on a layup late to end the half and sophomore guard Peyton Booth (Wadsworth, Ohio) nailed a long three-pointer to put the Wildcats up 48-35 after three periods.
