Women’s Swimming & Diving Set for America East Championships (Thur., Feb. 11-Sun., Feb. 14)

DURHAM, N.H. – The University of New Hampshire women's swimming and diving team is set to compete at the 2016 America East Swimming & Diving Championships hosted at Worcester Polytechnic Institute in Worcester, Mass.

The four-day event begins Thursday, Feb. 11 and concludes on Sunday, Feb. 14. Last year, the Wildcats finished in second place just 14 points behind the University of Maryland, Baltimore County after winning the competition the previous two years. In last year's meet, now sophomore Liza Baykova (Moscow, Russia) shattered the conference record in the in the 200-yard freestyle (1:47.48) en route to becoming the conference champion in the event. She also earned the conference crown in the 100-yard freestyle with a time of 50.18 seconds. At the end of the meet, she was named America East Rookie of the Year.
Classmate Jessica Harper (Easthampton, Mass.) won a pair of events to also take home two conference crowns. She took the title in the grueling 1,650-yard freestyle with a time of 16:42.81 and in the 500-yard freestyle, pacing her way to a time of 4:50.25. Harper took silver in the finals of the 100-yard butterfly with a time of 56.26 Both Harper and Baykova were also members of the quartet that took first place in the 800-yard freestyle relay.
Now senior Bettina Caspersen (Lyngby, Denmark) took bronze in the 200-yard individual medley as she came in with a time of 2:04.12. Caspersen, Baykova and Sarah Broderick (Haverhill, Mass.) took first in the 200-yard freestyle relay as the team came in with a time of 1:33.91.
Broderick took the top spot in the 100-yard backstroke when she touched the wall to a time of 56.58 seconds. Broderick swam the first leg of the champion 400-yard medley relay along with Harper and Baykova. The team finished with a time of 3:44.32. Broderick also came in second in the 100-yard freestyle with a time of 50.74. The trio also helped UNH take first in the 400-yard freestyle relay with a meet record time of 3:22.55.
