DURHAM, N.H. – Senior Corinne Coia (North Smithfield, R.I.) scored 13 points, but the University of New Hampshire women's basketball team fell to the University at Albany by a score of 78-52 on Wednesday afternoon at Lundholm Gym on Education Day.
The Wildcats dropped to 6-9 overall and 0-2 in America East with their seventh straight loss. The Great Danes improved to 12-3 overall and 3-0 in conference play.
New Hampshire goes on the road to face Stony Brook University on Saturday, Jan. 16 (2 p.m.). The team returns home for a game against the University of Maine on Monday, Jan. 18 at 3 p.m. on ESPN 3.
Sophomore Carlie Pogue (Cincinnati, Ohio) joined Coia in double-figure scoring with 12 points. The forwards combined for 25 of the team's 52 points and were both perfect from the free-throw line. Redshirt-freshman guard Emily Peters (Lindstrom, Minn.) shot 3 of 4 from beyond the arc, tallying nine points which ties her career-best.
After a tough first quarter, the Wildcats bounced back in the second. Peters hit two of her 3-pointers and sophomore Aliza Simpson (Londonderry, N.H.) added one of her own. UAlbany's Shereesha Richards kept the Wildcats at a distance, scoring 10 of her 26 points in the second quarter. She notched her sixth overall and fourth consecutive double-double on the afternoon.
Coia started her impressive second half effort with a three-point play at 4:58 in the third quarter. She was able to drive to the rim, draw a foul, and sink the ensuing free throw. The senior scored all 13 of her points in the half.
The Wildcats closed out the game on an 11-0 run, including treys from three different players. Freshmen Sam Sabino (Rumson, N.J.) and Alli Gribbin (Keller, Texas) both knocked down their first career three's in the closing minutes. The seven 3-pointers by the Wildcats tied the team's season high. The shooting percentage of 38.9 from beyond the arc is the best for UNH this season in a single game.
