Men’s Hoops Falls to Vermont, 66-50

DURHAM, N.H. – Junior Jacoby Armstrong (Sachse, Texas) scored 13 points and grabbed six rebounds as the University of New Hampshire men's basketball team fell 66-50 to the University of Vermont, Wednesday night at Lundholm Gym.
The Wildcats' three game winning streak was broken, falling to 11-9 overall and 4-3 in conference play. The Catamounts improved to 13-9 overall and grabbed second-place in the America East with a 5-2 record.
The Wildcats close out the first half of America East play at the University of Maryland, Baltimore County on Saturday, Jan. 30 (1 p.m.). After a trip to Binghamton University (Feb. 6), UNH returns home on Monday, Feb. 8 (7 p.m.) for the University of Maine. Armstrong shot 4 of 9 from the field and drilled 5 of 8 free throws. Senior Ronnel Jordan (San Antonio, Texas) was the second double-digit scorer with 10 points.
Vermont was led by Ethan O'Day who tallied 19 points on 8 of 12 shooting. He also recorded a game-high three blocks. Kurt Steidl finished with 13 points and seven rebounds.
Vermont held the Wildcats to 23.7 percent shooting (14 of 59). UNH outrebounded the Catamounts 42-39 including a 15-6 offensive glass advantage. The rebounding effort led to an 11-2 second-chance-points lead.
The game was very low scoring, UNH held Vermont to 66 points, tied for fourth lowest total for an opponent this season. The Wildcats scored 50 points, tied for second lowest this season.
Vermont held a 31-24 lead at the break on a 36.7-24.1 percent advantage from the field. The Catamounts O'Day scored 13 points in the opening frame.
In the second 20 minutes, Vermont pushed its lead to 17 points, 46-29, with 13:13 to go. Armstrong slammed home a put-back dunk on a missed layup from junior Jaleen Smith (Freeport, Texas) and followed that up with another transition dunk to get some energy from the 1,202 in attendance.
