Smith's 32 Saves Backbones Women's Hockey to 3-0 Win at Maine

Smith Records First Career Shutout
ORONO, Maine – Kyra Smith (Littleton, Colo.) recorded her first career shutout with a 32-save performance to backbone the University of New Hampshire women's ice hockey team to a 3-0 victory against the University of Maine in Sunday afternoon's Hockey East matchup at Alfond Arena.
UNH improved to 10-16-1 overall and 7-10-0 in Hockey East by completing the weekend sweep of Maine, which is now 7-18-2, 3-14-1.
New Hampshire returns to action Jan. 29 (7 p.m.) at seventh-ranked Northeastern University. The Wildcats' next home game is Feb. 5 (7 p.m.) against the University of Vermont. Smith made 11 saves in the first period and 12 in the third as part of her shutout effort. She stopped 53 of 54 shots in the two-game series against the Black Bears. Carlee Toews (Grand Prairie, Alberta) recorded her first career multiple-point game with a goal and an assist. Cassandra Vilgrain (Calgary, Alberta) and Sara Carlson (Hutchinson, Minn.) netted UNH's other goals. Margo Lund (St, Paul, Minn.), Amy Schlagel (Blaine Minn.) and Julia Fedeski (Algonquin Highlands, Ontario) each tallied an assist.
Maine starting goalie Meghann Treacy exited the game when Vilgrain gave the 'Cats a 2-0 lead at 5:05 of the second period. She made nine saves and was charged with the loss. Mariah Fujimagari went the rest of the way and stopped 21 of 22 shots faced.
Maine recorded an 11-9 shot advantage in the first period but trailed 1-0 at the first intermission on Toews' goal, which was set up by Lund, at 9:52. The shots were even 3-3 until Toews broke the scoreless tie.
The Black Bears responded with pressure, but Smith denied both Eve Boissonneault and Calley Hutchison. Maine went on a power play at 13:09 and Smith recorded two saves the next two minutes to keep the home team scoreless. UNH returned to full strength at 15:09 and Smith made two more stops to preserve the one-goal lead.
New Hampshire went on a power play at 2:59 of the second period, and although the 'Cats did not score on the skater advantage, they did take a two-goal lead six seconds after Maine returned to full strength. Toews then set up Vilgrain's goal to extend the advantage to 2-0.
Carlson netted a power-play goal at 15:42 to push the margin to three goals. Schlagel and Fedeski were credited with the assists.
