Leissner and Camara Propel Men’s Hoops Over Rival Maine, 99-91

BANGOR, Maine – Sophomore Tanner Leissner (Converse, Texas) scored a career-high 30 points and sophomore Iba Camara (Dakar, Senegal) scored 16 points and grabbed 18 rebounds to lead the University of New Hampshire men's basketball team to a 99-91 win over the University of Maine, Monday night at the Cross Insurance Center.
New Hampshire improves to 9-8 overall and even through four games of America East play. The Black Bears drop to 6-12 on the season and 2-3 in league play.
New Hampshire travels to the University of Massachusetts Lowell on Thursday, Jan. 21 (7 p.m.) for the Wildcats' fourth ESPN3 game of the season. Leissner shot 11 of 18, a new career-high for baskets, from the field and drilled eight free throws. Camara shot 5 of 10 from the field and dropped 6 of 11 free-throw attempts. Junior Daniel Dion (Cedar Park, Texas) tallied a season-high 19 points, matching a career-best seven buckets. Classmate Jacoby Armstrong (Sachse, Texas) tallied 13 points with four rebounds.
The Wildcats jumped out to an early lead in the first half on 50.0 percent shooting (18 of 36).
New Hampshire was down early, 7-3, just 3-minutes into the game as Jordan and Leissner buried baskets to break it even. Both teams battled back and forth with no team leading by more than three points until Armstrong finished a jumper to take a 19-14 lead at the 11:53 mark.
Maine hung around, trailing 21-19 with 11:04 to go, when the Wildcats rattled off an 18-2 run to lead 39-21 with 5:27 remaining. Camara and Dion led the charge with eight and seven points, respectively, in the run.
UNH took a 20-point lead, 49-29, with one minute to play in the first on a Bramanti free throw.
New Hampshire outrebounded the Black Bears 52-33 and dominated the paint (46-26 scoring advantage) in the game. Maine made a run late off the Wildcats' 17 turnovers in in 40 minutes.
The Wildcats led by 20+ most of the second half, until 8:33 when Shaun Lawton drilled a 3-pointer, one of seven team threes in the final frame, to reduce the deficit to 73-54. The Black Bears slowly brought the score to within 10 points, 85-75, with 3:14 to go.
Maine cut the score to nine points, 92-83, with 50 seconds to play but UNH hung on for the victory. Maine outscored UNH 61-30 in the second half.
