
Men's Track and Field Takes Fourth Overall At The AE Outdoor Championships

ALBANY, N.Y.- Junior D'mahl McFadden (Penacook, N.H.), sophomore Drew Piazza (Danvers, Mass.) and senior Daniel Johnson (Lancaster, N.H.) each won gold to propel the University of New Hampshire men's track and field team to a fourth place finish in the America East Outdoor Track and Field Championships on Sunday at the campus of the University at Albany.
The University of Albany collected its 11th consecutive first place finish with 192.50 points. The University of Maryland, Baltimore County finished in second with 126 points. Binghamton University scored third with 113.50 points. The Wildcats collected fourth overall with 110 points. The University of Vermont grabbed fifth (84.50 points), UMass Lowell went home sixth overall (84 points), the University of Maine finished seventh overall with 76.50 points, Stony Brook University finished eighth with 56 points and the University of Hartford finished ninth with eight points.
This is the best finish for the men's side since 2010 when they took third overall with 127 points.
McFadden and sophomore Ryan Maney (Reading Mass.) finished first, 14.62-seconds, and second, 14.63, respectively in the 110-meter hurdles. McFadden, who took home gold in the indoor 60-meter hurdles championship, also took sixth overall in the 200-meter dash with a time of 22.42.
Piazza ran the 800-meter race in 1-minute, 50.45-seconds, IC4A qualifying, to take first overall. Classmate Christopher Poggi (Derry, N.H.) finished third overall in the event, breaking the tape in 1:51.39 to qualify for the IC4A.
Johnson took home gold in the decathlon with 6,337 points total. The senior took first overall in the 400-meter run (52.34), 110-meter hurdles (15.54), discus (37.75-meters) and the 1,500-meter run (5:01.29).
The 4x400 relay team of Poggi, Piazza, senior Isaiah Penn (Boston) and freshman Thomas Harter (Hampton, N.H.) pulled away with a first place finish clocking in with a time of 3:15.13, which is an IC4A qualifying time and sets a facility record. The 4x800 relay team consisting of junior James Anderson (Melrose, Mass.), freshman Joseph Poggi (Derry, N.H.), senior Steve Souza (Fall River, Mass.) and sophomore Jacob Kittredge (Amherst, N.H.) collected fifth overall with a time of 7:46.80.
The four championships for the Wildcats on the afternoon gave them six total between both days of competition. Yesterday, May 2, sophomore Michael Shanahan (Dover, N.H.) collected first overall in the hammer throw. He also engineered a first place finish in the weight throw during the AE Indoor Championships. Senior John Prizzi (Wyckoff, N.J.) grabbed gold in the 3,000-meter steeplechase as well on the first day of competition. This is the third consecutive first-place finish in the 3,000-meter steeplechase for the senior in the AE outdoor championships.
In the 400-meter race, Penn finished with a time of 48.33, IC4A qualifying, to take fourth overall.
Senior John Prizzi (Wckcoff, N.J.) finished fifth overall in the 5,000-meter race, breaking the tape in 14:55.20, which is an NEICAAA qualifying time.
In the 400-meter hurdles, sophomore Andrew McFarland (Nazareth, Pa.) finished seventh overall with an NEICAAA qualifying time of 54.72.
Senior Kevin Greene (Silver Spring, Md.) grabbed the final scoring spot, eighth overall, in the 1500-meter race with a time of 3:52.37.
