Poggi Takes a Pair of Golds as Men's Track and Field Finishes Fourth in Outdoor Home Opener

DURHAM, N.H. – Sophomore Christopher Poggi (Derry, N.H.) of the University of New Hampshire men's track and field team claimed a pair of first place finishes as the squad took fourth place of six teams in the outdoor home opener at the Reggie Atkins Track and Field Facility on Saturday.
The University of Maine took first place with a total of 157 points while Dartmouth College and the University of Rhode Island tied for second with 144 points apiece. The Wildcats finished fourth with 135.50 points as Bates College (75.50) and the College of the Holy Cross (21) took fifth and sixth, respectively.
Poggi took gold in the 400-meter dash as he ran to a time of 52.16 seconds. Junior Isaiah Penn (Boston, Mass.) was hot on Poggi's heels as he finished second with a time of 52.28 seconds.
The quartet of Thomas Harter (Hampton, N.H.), Christopher Poggi, Joseph Poggi (Derry, N.H.) and Joseph Boles (Canterbury, N.H.) finished first in the 4x400-meter relay as they broke the tape with a time of 3:26.88.
Sophomore Andrew McFarland (Nazareth, Pa.) took first place in the 400-meter hurdles to earn nine points for the 'Cats as he finished with a time of 58.91 seconds. Junior Tyler Mulcahy (Weymouth, Mass.) took bronze in the event with a time of 1:00.57.
Junior Daniel Johnson (Lancaster, N.H.) finished sixth in the 110-meter hurdles to register four points for the Wildcats. He ran to a time of 15.67 seconds. Junior Christopher DeCarlo (Derry, N.H.) notched four points for the Wildcats in the 100-meter dash as he finished seventh with a time of 11.08 seconds. Classmate Dylan Pelletier (Orford, N.H.) came in eighth place with a time of 11.20 seconds.
Senior Steven Souza (Fall River, Mass.) earned a silver medal finish in the 800-meter run as he clocked in with a time of 2:05.24. Boles took seventh place in the event as he finished with a time of 2:07.59.
In the field events, freshman Nicholas Ritzo (Portsmouth, N.H.) and junior Thomas Lynch (Pelham, N.H.) took fourth and fifth place in the shot put. Ritzo hit a mark of 14.18 meters while Lynch recorded a throw of 13.93 meters.
Freshman Shawn Case (Manchester, N.H.) leapt to a third place finish in the long jump as he cleared a distance of 6.47 meters. Classmate Richard Jasper (Rockland, Mass.) finished seventh in the event with a mark of 6.18 meters.
Senior Jacob Renaud (Lancaster, N.H.) took second in the hammer throw as he hit a mark of 53.87 meters. Sophomore Michael Shanahan (Dover, N.H.) took bronze as he hit a distance of 52.89 meters.
Freshman Alexander Tamulonis (Milford, N.H.) took bronze in the pole vault as he registered a mark of 4.56 meters in the event. Classmate Keelan McCoole (Bedford, N.H.) earned silver in the high jump as he hit a height of 1.95 meters.
The Wildcats remain home next weekend as they host the Wildcat Invitational on Saturday, April 11. The competition kicks off at 11 a.m.
