Official Release from Carolina Hurricanes
RALEIGH, N.C. – University of New Hampshire men's ice hockey standout Brett Pesce (Tarrytown, N.Y.) signed a three-year entry-level contract with the Carolina Hurricanes of the National Hockey League (NHL). The announcement was made by Hurricanes' executive vice president and general manager, Ron Francis, Friday afternoon.
"Brett has been a tremendous asset to our hockey program both on and off the ice," said head coach Dick Umile. "We all wish him nothing but the best as his career moves forward."
Pesce was a junior defender for the Wildcats in the 2014-15 season, when he recorded three goals and 13 assists for 16 points in 31 games. He led all UNH blue liners in assists, and he tied for fourth overall – and first among defensemen – in plus/minus rating at +10. Pesce missed nine games the middle of the season because of injury. He returned to the lineup Jan. 30 at the University of Notre Dame and tallied a point in 8 of 16 games the rest of the season with one goal and 11 assists for 12 points.
The 6-foot-3, 200-pounder was a solid two-way player who quarterbacked the top power-play unit and was adept at breaking out of the defensive zone by reading the play and executing a tape-to-tape pass or carrying the puck through the neutral zone.
In 110 career games as a UNH Wildcat, he compiled 43 points on 11 goals and 32 assists. Last year as a sophomore, Pesce recorded 7-14-21 in 41 games. In his freshman season of 2012-13, he tallied 1-5-6 in 38 games.
