Women's Basketball Drops 74-48 Decision to UAlbany

DURHAM, N.H. -- Senior forward Kaylee Kilpatrick (Saint John, New Brunswick) nearly earned a double-double with 17 points, eight rebounds and four blocks, but the University of New Hampshire women's basketball team fell 74-48 in Wednesday's America East game at Lundholm Gymnasium.
New Hampshire's overall record falls to 14-8 and 6-4 in league play. UAlbany improves to 16-7, 9-1.
Kilpatrick made 8 of 14 shots from the field and connected on her second-career 3-pointer on two attempts. Junior guard Elizabeth Belanger (Acton, Mass.) turned in eight points and four rebounds. Freshman center Carlie Pogue (Cincinnati, Ohio) recorded six points, five boards and two rejections.
Sophomore guard Imani Tate paced four Great Danes in double-digit scoring with 17 points and 10 rebounds for a double-double. She drilled 6 of 11 attempts from the field, including 5 of 7 from the charity stripe. Junior forward Shereesha Richards also notched a double-double with 12 points and 10 rebounds. Guards Sarah Royals and Zakiya Saunders pitched in scoring tallies of 12 and 10 respectively.
The Wildcats connected on 18 of 56 (.321) attempts from the field while the Great Danes shot 27 of 55 (.491) from the floor. UAlbany controlled the paint, outscoring (32-20) and outrebounding (42-36) UNH. The 'Cats racked up nine blocks in the loss.
The two sides were deadlocked at six points apiece out of the chute. Tate and Zaunders gave the Great Danes a brief lead, but the Wildcats countered with baskets from Belanger and Pogue to give UNH an 11-10 edge with 12:48 left in the first half.
UAlbany quickly regained the lead as it connected on jumpers from Edwards and Saunders. Royals tacked on another jumper to up the Great Danes' lead to 16-11 at the midway point of the first half.
New Hampshire battled back to pull within a point as a Kilpatrick netted a layup followed by a field goal from Belanger. After a bucket from Richards, UNH kept it a one-score game at 20-18 as Kilpatrick drained a triple from the right side. The visitors retained their lead as the Great Danes rattled off 14 consecutive points to pull ahead 34-18 with 2:28 left in the first half.
Sophomore guard Kristen Anderson (Greene, Maine) snapped the UAlbany scoring run with a 3-ball, but the Great Danes capped off the first half with five straight points. The Wildcats entered halftime trailing 39-21.
Belanger opened the scoring the second half with a made free throw. Saunders countered for the Great Danes with a second chance layup despite a block from Pogue. The two sides traded blows as the score raised to 47-28 with 13:26 left in the second half.
UNH looked to spark a comeback as Sarah-Marie Frankenberger (Gross Gerau, Germany) drained a pair of free throws. Ariel Gaston (Toledo, Ohio) added a made free throw of her own followed by a Kilpatrick layup. UAlbany however managed to keep its 17-point cushion with back-to-back scores from Tate to lead 51-34 with 9:49 left in the second stanza.
The Great Danes turned to Richards as she fueled an 11-2 surge to extend their lead to 62-36 with 7:20 left in regulation.
New Hampshire was unable to overcome the second-half deficit despite scoring efforts from Madison Lopez (Albuquerque, N.M.), Stephanie Spoto (Pittsford, N.Y.), Belanger and Kilpatrick in the waning moments of regulation. UAlbany was able to hand UNH the 74-48 setback.
UNH looks to bounce back Saturday, Feb. 7 (1 p.m.) at the University of Maryland, Baltimore County. The Wildcats return to Lundholm Gymnasium on Wednesday, Feb. 11 (7 p.m.) to take on the University of Vermont.
