Armstrong Scores 19 points as Men's Hoops Falls in OT, 72-67, to BC

CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. – Junior Jaleen Smith (Converse, Texas) hit a 3-pointer with eight seconds to play to force overtime and classmate Jacoby Armstrong (Sachse, Texas) tallied 19 points and seven rebounds as the University of New Hampshire men's basketball team fell 72-67, in overtime, to Boston College, Wednesday afternoon at the Conte Forum.
The Wildcats fell to 7-6 overall in their first overtime contest this season. The Eagles won their fourth straight game and improved to 7-6 overall.
Armstrong shot 8 of 15 from the field and hit 3 of 5 attempts from the charity stripe. Senior Ronnel Jordan (San Antonio, Texas) finished with 16 points, eight in each half, on 6 of 13 shooting. Smith notched 15 points with nine rebounds, to pace all players. Sophomore Iba Camara (Dakar, Senegal) scored seven points and grabbed eight rebounds.
With eight seconds to play in regulation, and the Wildcats down 60-57, Smith collected a pass and took a one dribble, pull up 3-pointer from the right wing and knocked it down to knot it all up, 60-60 and send it to overtime.
In the extra period, UNH got on the board first with a Armstrong jumper just inside the 3-point line that was matched by the Eagles Jerome Robinson on the other end. Armstrong hit a free throw to take a 63-62 lead with 3:04 to play, the last Wildcat lead of the afternoon.
To kick off the second half, which UNH claimed a 29-27 lead on a running Smith 3-pointer to beat the buzzer, Armstrong buried a jumper to go up 31-27. The score was back in forth in the final frame with 12 lead changes.
New Hampshire led 50-49 with 6:18 to play but the Eagles scored seven straight points to claim the largest lead of the second half. The Wildcats stormed back, going on a 10-4 run in the final 3:40 to tie it and send it to overtime. Jordan and Smith tallied three points apiece while Armstrong scored four in the final minutes.
The Wildcats began the first half trailing 17-6 with 12:59 to play. New Hampshire went on a 12-2 run to narrow the deficit to 19-18 with 7:37 to go. Jordan tallied five points in the stretch, including a 3-pointer, while Camara scored a lay-in and drilled a free throw for three points. Classmate Tanner Leissner (Converse, Texas) nailed a running jumper and Smith started the run with 15-foot made basket. Leissner totaled eight points before fouling out with 4:25 to go in the second half.
UNH never trailed by more than seven points for the remainder of the first stanza, as they were down 27-20 with 2:44 to play. The Wildcats scored the next nine points to end the first half, including the Smith trey to beat the buzzer and claim a 29-27 lead. Jordan finished a transition, right-handed finger roll to chip away at the deficit, 27-23, after hitting 1 of 2 freebies.
The Eagles were led by Eli Carter who scored 28 points on 10 of 21 shooting. Robinson tallied 14 points while Ervins Meznieks and Dennis Clifford scored 10 each.
