DURHAM, N.H. – Junior tri-captain Jacoby Armstrong (Sachse, Texas) scored a game-high 22 points including 10 free throws but the University of New Hampshire men's basketball team fell 68-50 to American University, Saturday afternoon at Lundholm Gymnasium.
The Wildcats two-game winning streak was snapped and they dropped to 3-2 on the season. The Eagles secured their first win of the year to improve to 1-4 overall.
Armstrong shot 6 of 11 from the field and hit 10 of 14 free-throw attempts in the game for his second straight 20+ point performance. Sophomore Iba Camara (Dakar, Senegal) scored four points and grabbed nine rebounds. Senior Joe Bramanti (Andover, Mass.) tallied six points and six rebounds in 29 minutes of action.
The second half was all American, shooting 53.6 percent (15 of 28) from the field and 42.9 percent (6 of 14) from 3-point range to New Hampshire's 25 percent (5 of 20) on field goals and 14.3 percent (1 of 7) from beyond the arc.
UNH held a 28-23 lead by halftime but the Wildcats led by 12 points with 10:42 left in the first before the Eagles narrowed the deficit throughout the final 10 minutes to five points.
American's Delante Jones scored first in the second frame to inch within three points before Armstrong finished in the paint. James Washington nailed a layup and Jeese Reed hit a 3-pointer to tie it all up, 30-30, just 2:30 minutes into the final period.
Then the Eagles pushed the offensive pedal, rattling off a 16-5 run that lasted about seven minutes and eventually took a 50-37 lead with 7:57 to play.
The Wildcats would close it to nine, 53-44, on two Armstrong free throws at the 5:26 mark but AU jumped to its largest lead, 68-49, with 30 seconds remaining.
The Eagles were led by Washington who finished with 19 points (7 of 9) and five assists. Reed scored 16 points (6 of 13) and was one rebound shy of a double-double. Jones was the final double-digit scorer with 11 points and also corralled eight rebounds and dished one assist.
American held a 12-6 turnover advantage, which led to a 14-3 points-off-turnover lead.
Sophomore Tanner Leissner (Converse, Texas) sat out for his second straight game because of injury.
