Women's Swimming and Diving Welcomes Northeastern to Swasey Pool (Oct. 24; 12 p.m.)

DURHAM, N.H. -- The University of New Hampshire women's swimming & diving team looks to notch back-to-back wins, welcoming Northeastern University to Swasey Pool for a dual meet Saturday, Oct. 24 (12 p.m.).
THE STATE OF NEW HAMPSHIRE: The Wildcats are coming off a 179-121 victory against the University of Vermont in their first meet of the season at Swasey Pool on Oct. 17. The team claimed first place in 12 different events en route to the victory.
Junior Sarah Broderick (Haverhill, Mass.) and sophomores Liza Baykova (Moscow, Russia) and Jessica Harper (Easthampton, Mass.) all captured four first-place wins. All three started off the meet with a first-place finish in the 200-yard medley relay with a time of 1 minute, 46.60 seconds.
Broderick and Baykova were also members of the 400-yard freestyle relay team that broke the Swasey Pool record with a time of 3:30.64. Broderick's other victories came in the 100-yard backstroke (58.89) and 100-yard freestyle (52.76). Baykova's first-place success continued in the 50- (24.01) and200-yard freestyle (1:53.86) events.Harper set the pace the 200-yard butterfly (2:03.12), 200-yard backstroke (2:03.30) and 100-yard butterfly (56.34), earning first-place finishes in all three.
In the diving events, sophomore Hailee Miller (Milton, Mass.) posted a career-best 214.27 for a second place finish from the one-meter board. She also went on to finish third from the three-meter diving board.
SCOUTING NORTHEASTERN: Northeastern recently hosted Harvard University for an exhibition meet at Barletta Natatorium. The Huskies captured 18 top-three finishes, including five first-place finishes.
Sophomore diver Caroline Gonsalves highlighted the day, scoring well enough in both the one-meter and three-meter dives to qualify for the NCAA Zone A Diving Championships.
Sophomore Christine Leong and juniors Tove Bjork, Delaney Lanker, and Kerry Treusdell won the 400-medley relay with a time of 3:58.84. Sophomore Sara Touchette-McGowan claimed first in the 200-meter freestyle (1:53.59) and 50-meter butterfly (26.05).
Junior Taylor Ellis and freshman Carly Schnabel rounded out the victories for the Huskies with first-place finishes in the 50-meter breaststroke and 100-meter freestyle respectively.
ENVELOPE PLEASE: Baykova was named the America East Swimmer of the Week on Oct. 20 for her performance against the Catamounts. In her rookie season, Baykova snapped a program and conference record in the 200-yard freestyle with a provisional cut time of 1:47.48 at the America East Championships. Meriting the Most Outstanding Rookie at the meet, the performance trumped Denise Leckenby's UNH time of 1:48.33 set in 1996. Liza also garnered the ECAC Swimmer of the Meet honor at the three-day championships held at the University of Pittsburgh's Trees Pool. Baykova garnered the accolade after tallying first place finishes in the 50- (23.23) 100- (50.63) and 200-yard freestyle events (1.47.54).
AMERICA EAST ELITE: Baykova and Harper occupy the top rank amongst America East swimmers in several events this season. Here is the breakdown and times in which New Hampshire swimmers pace the conference in each event:
THE WILLMAN FILE:Head coach Josh Willman enters his 23rd season as head coach of the Wildcats for the 2015-16 campaign. Last season, he collected his 17th Coach of the Year Award and guided UNH to its eighth conference championship in program history. Willman's success has established him as the most highly decorated coach in America East and been named the conference's Coach of the Year 13 times in the last 20 seasons (1993, 1995, 1997, 1998, 1999, 2002, 2005, 2006, 2010, 2011, 2012, 2013 and 2014). A 1984 graduate of the University of Miami (FL), Willman began his collegiate coaching career at UNH in 1991 as an assistant coach. He took over as head coach the next season and saw immediate success, collecting the first Coach of the Year honor of his distinguished career.
ON DECK: New Hampshire treks to Central Connecticut State University for dual meet action Saturday, Oct. 31 (2 p.m.). The 'Cats return to the confines of Swasey Pool on Friday, Jan. 29 (5 p.m.) against archrival University of Maine.

ALL AROUND THE MAP AND ENDING IN DURHAM: The Wildcats' roster features swimmers from four countries. UNH has 16 student-athletes from the United States and representatives from Denmark, Germany and Russia. Baykova, who hails from Moscow, Russia, is farthest from home at 4,435.97 miles.
