Men's T&F Takes Top Spot in Dual Home Meet Against Holy Cross

DURHAM, N.H. – The University of New Hampshire men's and track field squad won 14 events to defeat the College of the Holy Cross in its home dual meet Saturday afternoon (Jan. 17) at the Paul Sweet Oval indoor track.
The Wildcats opened up 2015 in a big way earning a total of 233 points while the Crusaders came away with 199.
New Hampshire placed first in all of the runs (400m, 500m, 800m, 1000m, one mile and 300m).
Junior D'mahl McFadden (Penacook, N.H.) got the Wildcats on the right foot placing first in the 200m dash with a time of 23.28 seconds. He also took the top position the 55m-hurdle event (7.88m).
In the 400m event, UNH swept the top three spots led by Christopher Poggi (Dover, N.H.), Joseph Poggi (Dover, N.H.), and Ross Hardy (North Andover, Mass.). The three finished with times of 51.22, 52.78 and 53.06 seconds respectively.
Sophomore Drew Piazza (Danvers, Mass.) ran the 800m event with a time of 1:54.50 to come in first. In the following event, 1000m run, senior captain Kevin Greene (Silver Spring, Md.) paced the Cats to a top finish (2:31.45). Greene continued his great performance coming in first in the one mile run (4:10.54) and was four seconds ahead of fellow teammate John Prizzi (Wyckoff, N.J.) who came in second.
For the 4x400m relay, the team of Hardy, C. Poggi, J. Poggi and Christopher DeCarlo (Derry, N.H.) came in first with a total time of 3:31.67.
In the jump events including the pole vault, New Hampshire came in first in all of them. Underclassmen Joel Nkounkou took the first position in the long jump (6.12 m/ 20-01.00) and triple jump (12.51m/41-00.50).
The Wildcats sustained their tremendous performance against the Crusaders as five separate student athletes claimed the top five spots in the shot put competition led by Michael Shanahan (Dover, N.H.), Nicholas Ritzo, Thomas Lynch (Pelham, N.H.), Jacob Renaud (Lancaster, N.H.) and Joseph McKee (Dover, N.H.).
In the final event of the day, Shanahan and Renaud took the first and second positions in the weight throw event. Shanahan numbers consisted of 19.37m/63-06.75 while Renaud was right behind him with 16.80m/55-01.50.
Up next, UNH returns to the Reggie Lewis Center in Boston for a second time this season to compete in the Joe Donahue Invitational (4 p.m.).
