Men's Hoops Pulls Off A 73-66 Overtime Win At Binghamton

VESTAL, N.Y. - Freshman Tanner Leissner (Converse, Texas) finished with 17 points and 9 rebounds as the University of New Hampshire men's basketball team defeated Binghamton University, 73-66, in overtime Saturday afternoon at the Events Center.
UNH improves to 9-9 and 2-3 in the America East. Binghamton falls to 2-18, 1-4 AE.
Senior Matt Miller (Arnold, Md.) notched a season-high 16 points (5 of 6 shooting) and recorded seven boards. Jacoby Armstrong (Sachse,Texas) had 12 points (5-for-10) and five rebounds. Jaleen Smith (Freeport, Texas) tallied 13 points (4 of 6), grabbed eight rebounds and dished out a career-high seven assists.
Five different players recorded double-digit scoring for Binghamton. Justin McFadden notched 12 points (3 of 7), Willie Rodriguez totalled 11 points (4 of 11) and nine rebounds and Yacob Yosef mustered 10 points (2 of 5) to jumpstart the offense.
New Hampshire gave away a season high 22 turnovers while shooting 25 of 48 from the field and 6 of 12 from beyond the arc to stay within eight points of Binghamton all afternoon. The Wildcats won the bench battle (21-12 advantage) and points in the paint (34-30 advantage).
Binghamton shot 22-for-57 from the field, including 1 of 6 in overtime. They were held to 4 of 19 from 3-point land but recorded 23 points off the UNH turnovers.
The Wildcats out rebounded Binghamton 45-27 but were outscored in second chance points 11-5.
Tied 60-60 in overtime, Leissner began the scoring with a contact layup. Following a Bobby Ahearn basket, Armstrong got himself a layup on the other end to hold a two-point lead.
New Hampshire dominated the paint in OT with a 8-2 advantage.
After Ahearn nailed 1 of 2 free-throw attempts, Leissner and Miller both scored in the paint to go up 68-64.
UNH nailed 5 of 7 free throws in the final 50 seconds of overtime to preserve the win. The Wildcats are 1-1 on the year when games going into overtime. The other overtime contest occurred at LIU Brooklyn (Dec. 22; 73-72 loss).
In the second frame, UNH never regained the lead until Frank Okeke (DeSoto, Texas) buried a corner three to go up 53-51 with 7:19 remaining.
Binghamton tied it all up 55-55 with a 3-pointer by Marlon Beck II (11 points) with 4:08 remaining in regulation. Binghamton held the lead until Armstrong tied it up, for the ninth time, on a layup, 58-58, with just under a minute to play.
Smith nailed two clutch free throws with 16 seconds left in the second stanza to send it to overtime.
Armstrong ignited a 8-2 run to start the opening 20 minutes with a deep jumper over a defender.
Binghamton responded with a 14-3 run of their own to take a 16-11 lead, capped off by a driving layup from Magnus Richards with 12:05 to go in the half.
Miller nailed two consecutive 3s, part of eight straight UNH points, to regain a 19-16 lead with 9:26 to play. Miller finished the opening stanza with 11 points (3-for-4 on treys).
Rodriguez buried a layup and a jumper in a 7-2 run to recapture a 25-21 lead over UNH with 6:13 to go.
New Hampshire then scored five straight points in the following minute from a Leissner 3-pointer and an Armstrong contact layup to take a 26-25 lead.
New Hampshire returns home to host a nationally televised game against UMass Lowell (Jan. 19) on FOX College Sports (3:30 p.m.). This is the second game in a double header as both women's teams clash at Lundholm Gymnasium (1 p.m.).
