DURHAM, N.H. -- Senior guard Ariel Gaston (Toledo, Ohio) scored 17 points and freshman center Carlie Pogue (Cincinnati, Ohio) registered her second career double-double in her first career start to power the University of New Hampshire women's basketball team to Saturday afternoon's wire-to-wire 67-45 America East Conference victory over the University of Maryland, Baltimore County at Lundholm Gymnasium on Alumnae Day.
New Hampshire improves its overall record to 10-5 and 2-1 in conference play. UMBC suffers its fifth consecutive loss and falls to 5-10, 1-1.
Gaston shot 7 of 13 from the field and tallied three steals and two assists. Pogue registered 10 points and a game-high 10 rebounds. Junior guard Elizabeth Belanger (Acton, Mass.) rounded out the double-digit scorers for UNH with 11 points while ripping down five boards. Senior guard/forward Sarah-Marie Frankenberger (Gross Gerau, Germany) pitched in nine points and three assists coming off the bench.
Junior guard Capree Garner led the Retrievers with 15 points on 7 of 10 shooting. Sophomore guard Emily Russo and senior center Dana Lewis each chipped in eight points apiece. Russo snagged eight boards while Lewis racked up two blocks.
The Wildcats connected on 19 of 53 (.358) attempts from the field while the Retrievers shot 17 of 48 (.354) from the floor. UNH posted a season-high in free throws made with 25 on 32 attempts (.781). The Wildcats edged out the Retrievers in both rebounds (37-33) and points in the paint (22-20). Additionally, New Hampshire corralled a season-high 15 offensive rebounds and notched 11 second-chance points.
UNH scored on its first possession as senior forward Kaylee Kilpatrick (Saint John, New Brunswick) tallied a layup. The Wildcats tacked on contributions from Pogue and Belanger to lead 7-2 early in the contest. UMBC relied on Garner for scoring early as she notched the first six points for the visitors. However, New Hampshire maintained its five-point edge to lead 11-6 with 15:31 left in the first half.
UMBC engineered a 6-2 run as field goals from sophomore guard Taylor McCarley, Garner and Lewis fell to pull the Retrievers within a point at 13-12. However, New Hampshire staged a 19-3 run at the 12:20 mark, lasting 8 minutes, 17 seconds. Sophomore guard Kristen Anderson (Greene, Maine) sparked the run with a jumper. Gaston and Belanger followed with buckets at the 10:09 and 8:18 marks. Gaston added the eighth consecutive point of the surge with a fastbreak layup. Russo interrupted the run as she completed a three-point play. New Hampshire completed the run as Kilpatrick and Belanger netted baskets to lead 32-15 with 4:25 remaining in the first stanza.
The two sides traded baskets in the waning moments of the first frame as UNH entered halftime with a 34-20 lead.
UMBC scored the first six points to begin the second half as the visiting team quickly narrowed the deficit down to single digits at 34-27. However, New Hampshire reconstructed its double-digit lead as the 'Cats led 40-27 with 15:38 left in regulation. UMBC again brought UNH's advantage down to single digits as a 2-for-2 trip to the charity stripe for Anderson was sandwiched by 3-pointers from freshman guard Maddie Torresin and Russo. The Wildcats' lead dropped to seven at 42-35 as Russo tallied a layup at the 11:39 mark.
New Hampshire methodically engineered a 12-4 by attacking the paint and getting to the free throw line, upping its advantage 54-39 with 6:57 left on the clock.
UMBC attempted to rally late in the match as Lewis, McCarley and Garner all drained field goals in the last six minutes of play to trial 57-45. Despite their efforts, the Wildcats never relinquished the double-digit lead and pulled away in the waning moments of regulation. UNH's defense stymied the UMBC offense in the last 4:04, not allowing a basket and propelled the home team to win its 10th game of the season with a 67-45 decision.
