DURHAM, N.H. -- Carlie Tarbell (Wakefield, Mass.) recorded 10 saves and Meg Flatley (Townsend, Mass.) scored in the 62nd minute to lift the University of New Hampshire field hockey team to Friday afternoon's 1-0 victory against Drexel University at Memorial Field.
UNH won its home opener to improve to 1-2 while Drexel, in its first road game of the season, fell to 2-1. The Dragons finished with the edge in both shots (16-9) and penalty corners (4-2).
Tarbell recorded six of her 10 saves in the first half for her eighth career shutout. Flatley scored her second goal of the season and 27th of her career. Drexel goalie Jantien Gunter, who was pulled in favor of an extra field player with 3:39 remaining, was credited with two saves.
Drexel held a 3-0 shot advantage when New Hampshire recorded its first scoring opportunity of the game in the 14th minute. Tarbell cut deep on the right wing toward the post, but her close-range shot was blocked by Gunter's leg pads.
The Dragons pressured in the 23rd minute, and Rachel Sumfest's rising reverse-stick blast from 10 yards on the left side was knocked aside by Tarbell's blocker. Two minutes later, Meghan Plank redirected a shot high that once again was steered away by Tarbell's blocker.
In the 30th minute, UNH's Kellie Joyce (South Pomfret, Vt.) swept a reverse-stick shot from the top of the circle that ricocheted high and hit the crossbar. Two minutes later, Emma Compagna (Canton, Mass.) was positioned in the middle of the circle and batted a bounding entry pass wide left of the cage.
Tarbell once again turned away Sumfest in the waining seconds and the teams entered halftime scoreless with Drexel ahead in shots (10-3) and corners (1-0).
Ten minutes into the second half, Plank's redirection off an entry pass sailed high and wide of the right post.
In the 56th minute, the 'Cats earned their first corner of the game and it produced a second consecutive corner in which the battery of Flatley and Chandler Giese (Trappe, Pa.) set up Ashley Mendonca's (Brampton, Ontario) direct shot that was blocked aside by a charging Drexel defender.
The Dragons were awarded a corner in the 60th minute. Jessica McCarthy swung the ball from the top of the circle to the left, where Jenna Knouse flicked a waist-high shot that Tarbell saved.
UNH called time out at 60:25, but the Dragons immediately regained possession and Christina Conrad's bid was stopped by Tarbell.
The Wildcats methodically advanced the ball through midfield. Flatley corralled the ball at the 25 yard-line and surged to the top of the circle, where she fired a low blast into the cage at 61:38.
Drexel generated a corner one minute later, but Tarbell once again kept the Dragons scoreless by denying Chloe Pachuilo. DU called timeout with 3:39 remaining and pulled Gunter in favor of an extra field player – Mary Lynam.
UNH's defense limited the visitor's possession to midfield, then advanced the ball toward the empty cage with one minute to play. Flatley's one-time from 12 yards on the left wing was stopped by Lynam.
The Wildcats kept the ball on that end of the field the remainder of the game to secure the win.
New Hampshire returns to action Sept. 7 against 12th-ranked Stanford University. Game time at Memorial Field is 12 p.m.
