DURHAM, N.H. – The University of New Hampshire and Stanford University field hockey teams battled to a scoreless tie through regulation before Alex McCawley scored 4:54 into overtime to lift the 12th-ranked Cardinal to a 1-0 victory Sunday afternoon at Memorial Field.
UNH, which saw its seven-game home win streak end, is now 1-3. Stanford went 3-0 on its East coast road trip – the Cardinal also defeated the University of Maine (1-0; Sept. 4) and Boston University (3-0; Sept. 5) to improve to 5-0 overall.
New Hampshire goalkeeper Carlie Tarbell (Wakefield, Mass.) recorded five saves and Ashley Mendonca (Brampton, Ontario) was credited with one defensive save. Stanford counterpart Dulcie Davies made two stops to record her third consecutive shutout and fourth of the season.
Stanford recorded an 11-3 shot advantage – including the only shot of the extra session – and both teams tallied just one penalty corner because of exquisite defending by both teams inside the circle. In the second half, the Wildcats had two apparent goals nullified by dangerous play rulings.
The game's only goal was scored on a quick restart by Stanford. From 35 yards, Fran Tew threaded a pass between two UNH defenders to McCawely just outside the top of the circle. With a couple of quick touches, McCawley quickly advanced unimpeded and fired a low shot inside the left post to end the game at 74:54.
The visitors controlled possession in the opening 10 minutes of the first half and generated the first dangerous scoring chance in the fourth minute when Shannon Herold stole the ball near midfield and struck a pass that sent McCawley alone into the circle. McCawley blasted a low shot turned aside by Tarbell. In the ninth minute, Herold was deep on the right side and fired a shot through traffic that bounced wide of the far post.
UNH threatened to break the scoreless tie in the 10th minute, when Meg Flatley (Townsend, Mass.) attacked in transition down the middle of the field and, from 25 yards, sent a pass inside the circle on the left wing, where Emma Compagna (Canton, Mass.) one-timed a shot to the near post stopped by Davies.
In the 17th minute, Stanford's Elise Ogle reverse-stick shot from 12 yards on the left side was saved by Tarbell.
In the 32nd minute, UNH's Aggie Sutherland (Dauphin, Pa.) dribbled down the left wing and her insert pass was just beyond the reach of Compagna charging through the middle of the circle.
One minute later at the other end of the field, Ogle's shot eluded Tarbell but Medonca stopped the ball in front of the goalmouth and backhanded the ball to the right wing. Stanford regained possession, however, and Ogle's deflection at the right post was stopped by Tarbell.
Stanford, which had a 7-2 shot advantage in the first half, pressured in the 38th minute when McCawley drove along the right end line but was denied from close range on Tarbell's kick save. The Cardinal sustained pressure and Tew's shot from the middle of the circle sailed toward the upper-right corner, but Tarbell extended her blocker to keep the game scoreless.
The initial ruling was that UNH took a 1-0 lead at 39:25, but the goal was negated after a brief discussion by the umpires. Flatley initiated the sequence with a pass from the top-right of the circle down low to Compagna, who drove a waist-high ball across the goal mouth that was deflected in by Meg Carroll (Mansfield, Mass.).
In the 47th minute, Flatley once again created a dangerous scoring opportunity for the 'Cats by utilizing her speed to counterattack in transition. She continued from the top of the circle to the right and, from eight yards, struck a low line drive wide of the near post.
Ten minutes later, the 'Cats were awarded the first penalty corner of the game but Lindsey Nerbonne's (Bow, N.H.) direct shot, which hit the back of the cage, was immediately deemed dangerous and therefore no goal.
Stanford, which had called its timeout at 52:50, earned its first penalty corner of the game in the 65th minute but Jessica Chisholm's rising shot was ruled dangerous to give possession to New Hampshire.
In the closing minute of regulation, Nerbonne advanced along the left endline, but her attempted centering flick sailed high to end the possession.
New Hampshire returns to action Sept. 12 against defending national champion University of Connecticut. Game time at Memorial Field is 4 p.m.
