Women's Track & Field Starts Season with a 112-79 Victory over Maine

ORONO, Maine – The University of New Hampshire women's track and field team defeated the University of Maine 112-79 with an impressive win to start the season. The two-day event (Dec. 5 and 6) started with multi events on Friday and finished with track and field events on Saturday, all of which took place at the New Balance Field House.
In the 18 events over the course of two-days, the women's squad earned 14 first-place finishes.
New Hampshire's sophomore Laura Rose Donegan finished first in the 1000m run with a time of 2:59.85 which is the University of Maine Field House record.
Senior Anne Twombly placed first in the 800m run (2:24.03). The Wildcats secured the second and third place positions including Lauren Brown and Angelyn Masters.
In the pole vault, Maine's Jaclyn Masters took the first spot while UNH finished second and fourth respectively. UNH's freshmen Kari Murnane finished second (3.20m – 10-06.00) as Rachel DePalma followed with a mark of 2.60m (8-06.25).
Freshmen Kayla Farren took the top spot in the 300m run (10:17.06) as Riley Gilmore and Julia Shorter followed filling in the second and and third positions.
The Wildcats placed second, third, fourth and fifth in the long jump. Emma Checovich finished with 4.95m (16-3.00).
The next event was the high jump as UNH's Jessica Salley finished first 1.62m. Freshmen Tessa Artruc finished second in the event 1.57m (5-01.75).
New Hampshire's junior Abigail Kaplan took the second position in the shot put 14.24m (46-08.75).
In the triple jump, the Wildcats finished in first (10.90m) led by Lexie Arbour. The team also finished in third place.
UNH took the top five spots in the one mile run as junior Cassandra Kruse paced the 'Cats to a first place finish with a time of 5:16.60.
In the 60m hurdles, UNH's senior Virginia LaValle placed first with a time of 9.23.
For the 400m dash New Hampshire took the top two spots led by Alyson Messia and Danielle Gajewski.
New Hampshire's Gina Conti paced the Wildcats to another first place finish in the 500 meter run with a time of 1:21.45.
UNH earned first place in the 4x400 relay. The team of Messina, Conti, Gajewski, and Kristen Sherlock finished in 4:08.14 for five points.
The 'Cats 4x800 meter relay team also notched a first-place finish for a time of 9:51.10.
In Friday's Pentathlon, New Hampshire's senior Lavallee finished second with a total of 3094 points to lead the Wildcats. Six other UNH athletes competed in the indoor-meet.
The Wildcats return to action Saturday, Dec. 13 when it travels to Boston for the Jay Carisella Carnival.
