Men's Hoops Comes Up Short Against LIU Brooklyn in Overtime, 73-72

DURHAM, N.H. – The University of New Hampshire men's basketball team came up short against LIU Brooklyn in an overtime thriller, 73-72 in Lundholm Gymnasium on Monday night.
UNH drops to 6-5 on the season while LIU Brooklyn improves to 4-6 overall, riding a four game winning streak.
The last overtime contest occurred last season as the squad fell at home to Binghamton University (Feb. 12; 72-71).
With 16 seconds left in regulation, down 64-63, junior tri-captain Joe Bramanti (Andover, Mass.) earned a trip to the line on a driving layup to send the game into overtime burying one of his free throw shots.
Tanner Leissner (Converse, Texas) finished with 10 points (5-for-13 shooting) and a career-high 11 rebounds to record his first double-double as a Wildcat, and the only current athlete to tally one. Sophomore forward Jacoby Armstrong (Sachse, Texas) totaled a career-high 18 points (8 of 11) and two blocks. Sophomore guard Jaleen Smith (Freeport, Texas) scored 13 points (5-for-11).
The Blackbirds had three double-digit scorers. Landon Atterberry scored 16 (7 of 10), nine in the second half, with six rebounds. Elvar Fridriksson totaled 19 points (6-for-15) while Martin Hermannsson recorded 15 (6 of 10).
As a squad, UNH shot 43.3 percent from the field and outscored the opponent 50-38 in the paint. The bench totaled 30 points to the Blackbirds 17. LIU Brooklyn shot at a .474 clip and 40 percent from threes (6 of 15).
There were five ties throughout the game with 12 lead changes.
The Blackbirds jumped out to a 7-0 lead following a dunk in the lane by Landon Atterberry just 2:57 into the opening half.
UNH went on an 8-6 run to narrow the score, 13-8, with a Leissner layup.
LIU Brooklyn jumped out to a 15-point lead, 27-12, by a Fridriksson foul shot at the 8:33 mark in the first half.
The Wildcat's narrowed the score to one, following a 25-11 run, 38-37. Smith quarterbacked the run with seven points, one rebound, one block and an assist during the stretch.
UNH quickly pulled out to a five-point lead to open the second half, 43-38, on a 6-0 run following a Daniel Dion (Cedar Park, Texas) layup.
Just over halfway through the second frame, LIU Brooklyn's Hermannsson hit a 3-pointer to regain the lead 56-54 with 8:24 on the clock.
Up 62-57 with 3:51 left in the second stanza, Armstrong shot 2-for-2 from the charity stripe to give UNH the largest lead of the night (5 points).
Dion had a free throw with 2:44 left in regulation to push ahead 63-61. Shortly after, a Fridriksson 3-pointer, just under the 2:30 mark, regained the lead, 64-63, for the Blackbirds.
With three seconds left to play, the Blackbird's Fridriksson missed a game-winning three at the buzzer to send it to overtime.
UNH was down one in overtime with six seconds left when Armstrong shot a jumper just inside the paint. The ball rimmed out to a jumping Leissner, who couldn't bury the tip in and the final score stood at 73-72.
UNH travels to Western Michigan University (Dec. 30) to conclude the 2014 year. Tip-off at University Arena is set for 7 p.m. This contest is one-of-two remaining non-conference games this season. The Wildcats return home Jan. 26 to host the University at Albany (7 p.m.)
