Men's Basketball Topples Thomas College 84-36 in Home Opener

DURHAM, N.H. – The University of New Hampshire men's basketball team earned their first win of the 2014-15 season with an 84-36 triumph over Thomas College Tuesday evening from Lundholm Gymnasium.
With the win, the 'Cats improve to 1-1 on the young season. Thomas College suffered its second loss of the season and holds a mark of 1-2.
Three players on the Wildcats squad a posted double figures all from the bench. Junior Frank Okeke (DeSoto, Texas) and sophomore John Edwards (Charlotte, N.C.) put up 12 points apiece. Okeke added two rebounds and one assist. Edwards had two assists and one rebound on the night. Junior guard Ronnel Jordan (San Antonio, Texas) was right behind his fellow teammates adding 11 points and five rebounds (four defensive and one offensive).
Freshman Iba Camara (Dakar, Senegal) was just shy of his first double-double of the year as he posted a season high 15 rebounds and nine points.
Levi Barnes led Thomas with 12 points on 6 of 13 shooting from the floor. Eric Westbrooks netted eight points.
New Hampshire won their second consecutive tip-off and opened the game up going on a 9-2 run four minutes in with Jaleen Smith (Freeport, Texas) and Tanner Leissner (Converse, Texas) paving the way.
From that point on, UNH never looked back and controlled the game on both sides of the court.
With 1:25 remaining in the first half the 'Cats claimed a 37-14 lead, a 23 point margin, to close out the first half.
The Wildcats were too strong for the Terriers down the stretch in the second half as New Hampshire took its larges lead of the game (51 points) just a minute remaining in regulation.
In the second stanza New Hampshire posted 47 points while Thomas put up 22.
UNH was 24-for-33 (72.7%) from the line as Smith and Leissner were 3-for-3 while Edwards was also perfect (6-for-6).
The captains, Tommy McDonnell (Durham, N.H.) and Okeke, chipped in a total of 18 points and nine rebounds between one another.
Sophomore Daniel Dion (Cedar Park, Texas) was 2-for-4 beyond the arc as the team buried four of their 15 shots.
UNH put together a well-balanced game on the offensive and defensive sides of the ball.
New Hampshire returns to action Nov. 20 (7 p.m.) at Bryant. The Wildcats' next home game is Nov. 25 (7 p.m.) against Boston University.
