Women's Hockey Rallies From 3-0 Deficit But Falls 4-3 at Ohio State

COLUMBUS, Ohio -- The University of New Hampshire women's ice hockey team erased a three-goal deficit but The Ohio State University scored with 32 seconds remaining in regulation to record Saturday afternoon's 4-3 victory at OSU Ice Rink.
UNH is now 0-3-0 overall with all three losses by a one-goal margin. OSU, which prevailed 1-0 against the Wildcats on Friday night, is 2-0-0.
UNH goaltender Vilma Vaattovaara (Veikkola, Finland) was credited with 26 saves while Ohio State counterpart Kassidy Sauve stopped 22 shots.
The Buckeyes, who had 12 skaters record one point, took to a 3-0 lead in the first period with three goals in a span of 7 minutes, 30 seconds. Danielle Gagne, with the assistance if Katie Matheny and Melani Moylan, opened the scoring at 12:16. Kayla Sullivan extended the advantage to 2-0 at 15:04 and Alexa Ranahan pushed the cushion to three goals at 19:46.
OSU entered the first intermission with a 3-0 lead and 11-7 shot advantage.
UNH began its comeback on a Cassandra Vilgrain (Calgary, Alberta) goal at 10:00 of the second stanza. Kayla Mork (Victoria, Minn.) and Kate Haslett (Rothesay, New Brunswick) were credited with assists, and it marked the first career point for Haslett.
The Wildcats trimmed the margin to 3-2 on an unassisted shorthanded goal by Jonna Curtis (Elk River, Minn.) at 15:49. The 'Cats outscored their hosts 2-0 and outshot them 10-8 in the second period.
New Hampshire entered the third period with that one-goal deficit, but Amy Boucher (Edmonton, Alberta) scored her first career goal – an unassisted tally – to tie the score 3-3 at 7:10 of the final frame.
In the next 12 minutes, OSU recorded a 7-4 shot advantage and then the Buckeyes broke the tie on Claudia Kepler's goal at 19:28.
UNH pulled Vaattovaara in favor of an extra skater with 31 seconds to play, but neither team recorded a shot the rest of the way. OSU tallied an 11-8 shot advantage in the final frame for an overall 30-25 edge.
On special teams, the Wildcats were 0-for-1 on the power play but 4 of 4 on the penalty kill with a shorthanded tally.
New Hampshire concludes its season-opening five-game road swing Oct. 10 (at RIT) and Oct. 11 (at Syracuse). The Wildcats' home opener is Oct. 17 (7 p.m.) against Rensselaer.
