Women's hockey defeated, 4-3, by Vermont in Tuesday's home opener

DURHAM, N.H. – Sara Carlson (Hutchinson, Minn.) and Jonna Curtis (Elk River, Minn.) each netted a goal and an assist, but the University of Vermont scored a pair of third-period goals to rally past the University of New Hampshire women's ice hockey team, 4-3, in the Hockey East opener for both teams Tuesday night at the Whittemore Center.
UNH suffered its first loss of the season to slip to 2-1 overall and 0-1 in Hockey East action, while Vermont upped its record to 2-3, 1-0 HEA.
Video replay helped Vermont tie the contest at 3-all with 1:03 elapsed in the third period. Klara Myren was credited with the goal.
Meghan Huertas collected the unassisted game-winning goal at 15:15 of the final stanza.
UNH jumped out to a 1-0 lead at 2:07 of the opening period when Hannah Armstrong (Newmarket, Ontario) deposited a rebound past UVM netminder Roxanne Douville. Armstrong's first goal of the season was assisted by Jenna Lascelle (Cornwall, Ontario) and Jess Ryan (Cloquet, Minn.).
Vermont drew even, 1-1, on an Emily Ford power-play goal at 13:34 of the first period. The tally was assisted by Sarah Campbell and Brittany Zuback.
Zuback staked the Catamounts to a 2-1 lead at 15:24 of the first with assists by Klara Myren and Greer Vogl.
Carlson netted the equalizer on the power play for the Wildcats at 17:23 of the first period, splitting a pair of defenders before notching her team-leading third goal of the season. Curtis tacked on the assist to square things at 2-2.
Curtis struck at 11:59 of the second period with her second goal of the season to allow UNH to seize a 3-2 lead. Netminder Vilma Vaattovaara (Veikkola, Finland) started the transition with a tremendous kick save, which Carlson gathered up, carried into the UVM zone for a 2-on-1 before dealing to Curtis for the go-ahead score.
