BOSTON – Senior thrower Yoofi Abaka-Amuah (Worcester, Mass.) of the University of New Hampshire men's track & field team was named the America East Male Field Athlete of the Week on Tuesday.
Abaka-Amuah won both events in which he competed as he broke the UNH outdoor shot put record with a winning throw of 18.92 meters (62 feet, 1 inch) and also took first place in the discus at the UNH Wildcat Invitational on April 25. He finished co-MVP in the rankings with those 20 points, which helped the 'Cats win the meet.
Abaka-Amuah led the shot put field of 14 competitors from beginning to end with a 16.81m throw on his first attempt. That mark proved to be his sixth-best effort in the event, which he capped with the 18.92m record throw on his last attempt.
In the discus, Abaka-Amuah was in third place through two rounds but climbed into the lead with a 51.92m throw on his third attempt, and his best effort of 52.65m (172-9) was in the fourth round. There were a total of 18 competitors in the discus. The 52.65m is the second-best throw by an America East student-athlete in the 2026 outdoor season.
Abaka-Amuah has been named the Male Field Athlete of the Week four times in the 2025-26 academic year with a breakdown of two during the indoor season and two more in the outdoor season.
The UNH men's track & field team returns to action May 9-10 at the America East Championships, which are at UMass Lowell.
