BOSTON – Freshman midfielder Marlijn Swaan (Hilversum, Netherlands) of the University of New Hampshire field hockey team was named the America East Rookie of the Week on Tuesday.
Swaan scored three goals for a total of six points to lead UNH to a 2-0 week with road wins against Northeastern University (6-2 on Sept. 12) and previously-unbeaten Providence College (4-3 in overtime on Sept. 14).
Swaan's goal at 56:36 gave the Wildcats a 5-2 lead at NU to end a possible comeback by the Huskies, who had scored consecutive goals in the fourth quarter to climb within two goals. It was her first career goal.
The freshman midfielder scored consecutive goals at 25:53 and 41:48 to transform a one-goal deficit into the Wildcats' first lead of the game, 3-2, at Providence. Both the two goals and four points marked personal bests.
Swaan scored all three goals on a direct shot from the top of the circle on penalty corners.
Through five games, she ranks second on the team in goals (three) and third in points (six).
New Hampshire returns to action Sept. 19 (12 p.m.) at Rutgers University. The Wildcats' next home game is Sept. 21 (1 p.m.) vs. intrastate rival Dartmouth College for Alumni Day.
Wildcats for Life returns Sept. 29–Oct. 10
UNH Athletics' annual fall fundraiser is just around the corner, supporting student-athletes across all programs. This year, your impact will go even further thanks to a $35,000 match! Stay tuned for how you can get involved and help fuel the success of our Wildcats.
