BOSTON – Grad student Gabby DeAngelis (Bedford, N.H.) and freshman Mariam Nada (Portsmouth, N.H.) of the University of New Hampshire women's track & field team both recorded a second-place finish Saturday at the NEICAAA Championships at The Reggie Lewis Center. UNH finished the two-day meet in fifth place with 84 points.
"The women's team moved from an eighth-place finish at last year's indoor NEICAA championship to fifth this year – and also nearly tripled our point total," said Anna Magle-Haberek, the director of cross country and track & field. "This finish is very encouraging for our growth as a team. We won three events and finished second in another three.
"We finished high in distance, sprints, jumps and throws, which demonstrates our abilities as a well-rounded team," Magle-Haberek continued. "I'm really looking forward to seeing what we can do as we move into our outdoor season."
DeAngelis led three scoring Wildcats in the 800-meter run with second place in a time of 2 minutes, 15.09 seconds. Freshman Mia Carbone (Meriden, Conn.) was the next 'Cat across the finish line in sixth place at 2:19.54 and junior Ella Malone (Portsmouth, N.H.) placed seventh in 2:19.97. The trio earned eight, three and two points, respectively for New Hampshire.
Nada also turned in a runner-up performance with a time of 7.61 seconds in the 60m dash; that improved upon her third-fastest time (7.73) in the prelims and increased the Wildcats' score by eight points.
The University of Rhode Island won the 23-team meet with 134 points. URI was followed by Quinnipiac University (109 points), College of the Holy Cross and Sacred Heart University (97 points each) and UNH.
Grad student Regan Doody (Lee, N.H.) was edged at the finish line by .07-of-a-second in the 1,000m to take third place in 2:54.85 and add six points to UNH's team total.
Freshman Bailey Hall (Yardley, Pa.) crossed the finish line in 10:00.65 to take fifth place and four team points in the 3,000m run.
In the 4x800m relay, UNH's quartet of junior Delaney Hesler (Steep Falls, Maine), sophomore Reagan Hoy (Surry, N.H.), junior Lauren Boilard (San Francisco, Calif.) and freshman Mia Carbone (Meriden, Conn.) took eighth place in 10:01.79 for one point in the team total.
The 4x400m relay quartet of junior Kristen Kirk (Augusta, Maine), sophomore Jules Hickey (Pawling, N.Y.), senior Teagan O'Brien (Pawcatuck, Conn.) and sophomore Kailey Dillon (Merrimack, N.H.) also finished eighth with a time of 4:04.80.
The UNH women's track & field team returns to action with the start of the outdoor season March 28-29 at the Black & Gold Invitational at Bryant University. The Wildcats will host the Jim Boulanger Invitational on Saturday, April 5, and the Reggie F. Atkins Track and Field Facility will also be the site of the America East Championships on May 3-4.
