Willman Wins 22nd Career Coach of the Year Award
LEXINGTON, Va. – The University of New Hampshire swimming and diving team won the America East Championship for the fifth time in the last six years on Saturday evening at the VMI Aquatic Center. The Wildcats have a league-record 12 championships (1998, 1999, 2005, 2006, 2013, 2014, 2018, 2020, 2021, 2022, 2023, 2025).
"The America East Conference is growing stronger and more competitive each year and we knew that going in this year we would need to be at our best," Head Coach Josh Willman said. "We gained a lot of confidence throughout the dual meet season but rather than getting distracted by where we were placing and counting points, we just focused on doing our best and racing."
"This is one of the most driven group of swimmers that I've coached and combined with our strongest conference showing ever by our divers, we accomplished more than we could have expected," he added. "I'm really proud of our team and our staff for what we did this week."
Freshman Lydia Hart (Cornwall, Ontario), who won three individual gold medals and two relays, earned dual honors as Most Outstanding Swimmer and Rookie of the Meet. This marks the first time an athlete has achieved both America East honors since 2014.
Sophomore Grace Blume (Dedham, Mass.) was named Outstanding Diver of the Meet after taking gold in the 1-meter and silver in the 3-meter.
Senior Ana O'Neil (St. Paul, Minn.) earned the Elite 18 Award for having the highest GPA of any student-athlete competing at the America East Championships.
Willman, assistant coach Caleb Potvin and diving coach Dr. Rick Schavone were named the America East Staff of the Year. Willman, who is the America East Conference's most highly decorated coach, won his 22nd career Coach of the Year award. He has been selected America East Coach of the Year a league-record 18 times (1993, 1995, 1997, 1998, 1999, 2002, 2005, 2006, 2010, 2011, 2012, 2013, 2014, 2020, 2021, 2022, 2023, and 2025) and ECAC Coach of the Year four times (2003, 2011, 2013 and 2014).
The Wildcats won the championship with a total of 782 points and had nine champions this year. Hart led the way with three individual golds in the 500 freestyle, 200 freestyle, and 1650 freestyle, in addition to winning two relay titles.
