BOSTON – Senior captain Nicole Poulakis (Ajax, Ontario) and sophomore Abby Johnson (Walpole, Mass.) of the University of New Hampshire field hockey team were named Offensive Player of the Week and Defensive Player of the Week respectively, by America East on Tuesday.
This is the third consecutive week Poulakis has been selected the conference's Offensive Player of the Week, and she has been honored four times this season.
The duo led UNH to road wins against UAlbany (3-0) on Oct. 24 and Lafayette College (2-1) on Oct. 26.
Poulakis scored three goals, including a game-winning tally, for a total of six points in the pair of wins.
In the win at UAlbany that kept the 'Cats in a tie atop the conference standings, Poulakis corralled a long hit near midfield and raced past a defender to the top of the circle, where she pulled the ball to the left to avoid the charging goalkeeper. Poulakis settled the ball and struck a low shot past a defender into the cage to give UNH a 2-0 lead with 35 seconds left in the first half.
With UAlbany playing with an extra field player, Poulakis advanced past a defender on the right wing to the end line, where she split a pair of defenders and chipped a backhander past another defender into the cage to give the Wildcats a 3-0 lead with 100 seconds to play.
Two days later with the score tied 1-1 in the closing minute at Lafayette, Poulakis pulled down a bouncing entry hit in the middle of the circle and was brought down by the goalie to earn a penalty stroke for the Wildcats. She lifted a hard shot into the left side of the cage to give the 'Cats a 2-1 lead with 18 seconds on the clock.
Poulakis extended her goal streak to six games and point streak to 12 with Sunday's game-winning goal. She has 19 goals and seven assists for 45 points during the streak.
She enters the week ranked No. 2 in the nation in both points per game (3.00) and goals per game (1.27).
Johnson stopped 17 of 18 shots to backstop New Hampshire to road wins against UAlbany and Lafayette with a .944 save percentage and 0.50 GAA.
Johnson made eight saves to record her first shutout of the season – fourth career – at UAlbany. She made three stops when the Great Danes had four successive penalty corners in the 29th minute to preserve UNH's 1-0 lead.
Johnson followed that with a nine-save effort at Lafayette. She made three saves in the first quarter and four more in the second to keep the score tied 0-0 heading into halftime.
This is the first weekly award of the season for Johnson, who was a two-time Defensive Player of the Week in 2024.
UNH, which is 5-1 the past six games, plays its regular-season finale Oct. 30 (3pm) against Bryant University. Six Wildcat seniors will be honored before the game.
