LEXINGTON, Ky. – Throwers Joshua Hoffman (Litchfield, N.H.) and Liam McGovern (North Kingstown, R.I.) of the University of New Hampshire men's track & field team concluded their outdoor seasons at the NCAA East First Round meet, which is being held May 22-25.
The NCAA First Round, also known as the Eastern Preliminary Outdoor Track and Field Championship, was held at the University of Kentucky. The Top 48 athletes in the eastern half of the U.S. Division I NCAA are invited to attempt a finish in the top 12 in their events to earn a ticket to the finals of the NCAA Championships in Eugene, Oregon.
Hoffman rounded out his UNH career with 27th place in the men's discus, where he threw for 53.05 meters. He recorded that mark on the first of his three attempts.
The senior is a three-time qualifier to the NCAA First Round, a school record holder, four-time New England champion, and America East All-Conference in both shot put and discus.
To qualify for this meet, Hoffman threw a season's best of 54.63m to win his third consecutive New England championship in the discus. He was the #45 seed in the East.
"I am extremely proud of Josh, now a graduate of our program, for all of his successes during his time at UNH," said Cullen Aubin, UNH assistant track and field coach responsible for the throwing events. "Josh's legacy will be remembered for years to come, and our entire track and field team is better because of his work ethic and heart."
McGovern, a sophomore, also competed in the NCAA East First Round, where he was the #30 seed. To qualify for this meet, Liam threw a personal-best 63.83m at the Jim Boulanger Invitational at home. The America East conference and New England champion in the hammer throw was unable to record a legal mark in Wednesday's men's hammer competition.
"Liam is a young competitor and made great attempts on Wednesday," Aubin said. "He had a fantastic season both indoors and out, and I am looking forward to a future of high performance and chances to compete on the biggest stages."
