BOSTON – Junior forward Tasmin Cookman (London, England) and freshman goalkeeper Abby Johnson (Walpole, Mass.) of the University of New Hampshire field hockey team were named the Offensive Player of the Week and Rookie of the Week, respectively, by America East on Tuesday.
Cookman and Johnson lifted UNH to a 3-2 overtime victory against the University of Vermont at Memorial Field on Oct. 11. The win kept the Wildcats tied atop the America East standings at 3-0.
Cookman scored the game-tying goal in the fourth quarter and game-winning goal in OT. UVM took a 2-1 lead in the 48th minute, but the captain tied the score 13 seconds later when she advanced from midfield into the circle and air dribbled past a pair of defenders before tapping the ball into the cage.
On a penalty corner in overtime, Cookman blasted a low shot from the right side inside the near post to end the game at 69:04.
Cookman ranks second on the team in goals (nine), assists (four) and points (22). On the America East leaderboards, she is third in points per game and fourth in goals per game.
This is Cookman's first Offensive Player of the Week award in 2024 and sixth career.
Johnson was credited with five saves in UNH's 3-2 win against Vermont last Friday. She made four stops in the fourth quarter to extend the game beyond regulation.
Her one save in the third quarter was of the highlight-reel variety with a fully-extended left leg kick save off a penalty corner to keep the score tied 1-1 in the 37th minute.
Johnson made another outstanding save – this time with her blocker on a point-blank shot – to preserve a 2-2 tie in the 57th minute.
This is Johnson's second Rookie of the Week award. She received that award and the Defensive Player of the Week award Sept. 10.
This is UNH's second Offensive Player of the Week award this season; Kathelijne Knuttel (Groningen, Netherlands) was feted Oct. 1. This is the third consecutive week and fourth time in 2024 that a Wildcat is named Rookie of the Week; in addition to Johnson receiving the award twice, Faye Meijer (Purmerend, Netherlands) was honored each of the previous two weeks.
UNH field hockey has received a total of seven America East weekly awards this season.
New Hampshire has two home games Homecoming weekend. The Wildcats play 13th-ranked UAlbany on Friday, Oct. 18 (2 p.m.) and then Boston University on Oct. 20 (2 p.m.).
