Wildcat Freshmen Shine at Vermont Quad-Meet

BURLINGTON, Vt. – Three different freshmen won their events Saturday afternoon as the University of New Hampshire men's track and field team competed in the Vermont Quad-Meet at the Frank H. Livak Track & Field Facility.
The Wildcats finished the day with 148 points as a team to come in third place.
RESULTS
FIELD EVENTS
A trio of Wildcat freshmen claimed the top three spots in the discus throw with Max LaPointe (Amesbury, Mass.) winning the event with a throw of 152' 9" (46.56m). Caden Zalenski (Milford, N.H.) finished second with a toss of 142' 10" (43.55m) and Jack Washam (Nashua, N.H.) came in third after throwing for 124' 5" (37.92m).
Each of the top five finishes in the hammer throw were claimed by Wildcats with freshman Liam McGovern (North Kingstown, R.I.) securing a first-place finish with a throw of 174' 1" (53.07m). Senior Andrew Fleming (Acton, Mass.) had a throw of 172' 11" (52.71m) to place second while sophomore Max Rome (North Kingston, R.I.) finished third with a throw of 155' 10 (47.50m).
Washam and Zalenski rounded out the group for the 'Cats with fourth and fifth-place finishes.
Freshman Cameron Jacobs (Naugatuck, Conn.) came in seventh place in the javelin throw, reaching a distance of 122' (37.18m) while junior Andrew Kelly (Portsmouth, N.H.) finished eighth with a throw of 114' (34.74m).
Kelly tallied a second-place finish in the long jump, reaching a distance of 20' 7.75" (6.29m).
Freshman Kyran Maher (Andover, Mass.) came in second place in the pole vault with a height of 13' 11.25" (4.25m).
LaPointe found himself on the podium once again with a third-place finish in the shot put after throwing a distance of 41' 7.75" (12.69m).
TRACK EVENTS
In the 110m hurdles, Kelly tallied a fifth-place finish with a time of 17.17 seconds.
Freshmen Michael Mulcahy and Sam Street finished back-to-back with just .06 seconds in between their finishes in the 100m dash as Mulcahy came in fourth place with a time of 11.43 seconds.
The 'Cats had four runners finish in the top 10 of the 800m run with senior William Curran (Old Saybrook, Conn.) tallying the best finish at 1:55.45 to come in second place. Senior Kenney McElroy (West Linn. Ore.) crossed the finish line soon after for a third-place finish with a time of 1:55.82.
Sophomores Aidan Shea (Amherst, Mass.) and Brayden Kearns (Deerfield, N.H.) finished in fourth and seventh place to round out the 800m run for the Wildcats.
In the 400m hurdles, junior Adrian Sutton (Rochester, N.H.) won the event with a time of 56.12 seconds while freshman Nathan Fletcher (Portsmouth, N.H.) finished second clocking in at 58.30 seconds.
Mulcahy had another impressive finish when he placed third in the 200m dash, crossing the finish line in 23.33 seconds.
The 'Cats saw five runners finish in the top 10 of the 5000m run with freshman John Murphy leading the pack, coming in first place with a time of 15:00.07. Sophomore Kevin Finn finished third in 15:02.64 while freshman Zachary Hooper (Concord, N.H.) finished fourth in 15:03.13. Freshman Samuel Hilts (Concord, N.H.) came in fifth place, and sophomore Peyton Ramsey (Plainville, Conn.) finished seventh.
In the 3000m Steeple, freshman Joshua Lesniak (Durham, Conn.) placed second with a time of 10:01.89.
The squad of McElroy, Curran, Shea, and Kearns won the 4x400m relay race after combining to finish the race in 3:30.10.
The four-man team of Mulcahy, Street, Sutton, and Fletcher notched a second-place finish in the 4x100m relay race with a time of 44.01 seconds.

The Wildcats return to action when they travel to the UConn Northeast Challenge at the George J. Sherman Family Sports Complex in Storrs, Conn. on Friday, April 14-15.
