Woods Records Shutout in Senior Day Win vs. Columbia

DURHAM, N.H. – Nicole Poulakis (Ajax, Ontario) scored at 2:34 of the second overtime and Jemma Woods (Frimley, England) recorded four saves to lift the University of New Hampshire field hockey team to a 1-0 victory against Columbia University in Sunday's regular-season finale at Memorial Field.
Woods made three of her four saves in the overtime sessions, including two in the second OT. Columbia goalie Katie Wimmer finished with 23 saves, including 10 in the fourth quarter and one in the first extra session.
UNH improves to 12-6 overall and 8-1 at home. Columbia is 3-13.

- New Hampshire is the No. 3 seed of the 2023 America East Field Hockey Championships and will play sixth-seeded University of Maine in a Nov. 2 quarterfinal at UMass Lowell. Game time is 3 p.m.
- The winner advances to play second-seeded UAlbany in a Nov. 3 semifinal, also 3 p.m. at UMass Lowell.
- The tourney championship game is Nov. 5 (12 p.m.) at UMass Lowell.
FIRST QUARTER
- UNH recorded all six shots and all three penalty corners in the opening 15 minutes.
SECOND QUARTER
- The teams combined for a total of three shots in the second quarter with the Wildcats generating the 2-1 edge. The 'Cats also had the only corner of the quarter.
THIRD QUARTER
- The Wildcats recorded 11 more shots and five corners in the third quarter.
FOURTH QUARTER
- New Hampshire pressured heavily in the fourth quarter with 17 shots – 10 on goal – and 10 corners.
- In a two-minute span that started at 45:43, the Wildcats generated six corners and three shots, two of which were on target but turned away by Wimmer.
- In the 56th minute, Wimmer made a blocker save on a hard, rising shot off the stick of Tasmin Cookman (Woking, England) from the middle of the circle. Leah Glidden (Kittery, Maine) corralled the rebound on the left side of the circle but Wimmer shifted into position to also make that save.
- UNH closed with a flurry of opportunities with three corners and three shots in the final 90 seconds.
FIRST OVERTIME
- After generating two shots in 60 minutes of regulation, Columbia doubled that total in the 10-minute first overtime session.
- UNH produced three shots.
- In the opening minute of the extra frame, Glidden intercepted a pass and midfield for a breakaway. With a pair of defenders closing in from her right, Glidden ripped a low, hard shot from the middle of the circle that Wimmer turned aside.
- With 22 seconds on the clock, Columbia earned its first corner. Maya Walker settled the insert at the top of the circle but her shot was blocked.
SECOND OVERTIME
- The Lions recorded three shots in the opening two minutes but UNH ended the game with its only shot in the second extra session.
- Woods faced her biggest test of the game less than a minute into the second OT.
- Kennedy Sholeen controlled an entry pass in the middle of the circle, but Woods knocked down the shot. The rebound went to Annabelle Brodeur, but Woods moved to her right to be in position toalso make that save and extend the game.
- Poulakis beat a defender along the right end line and, from close range, lifted a shot over Wimmer inside the far post to give UNH a 1-0 win at 72:34.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
- UNH finished with a 40-7 shot advantage that included 24-4 on goal.
- The Wildcats recorded a 19-1 edge in penalty corners.
SENIOR DAY
- Prior to the game, the UNH field hockey team acknowledged the six seniors and two grad students who played their final game at Memorial Field.
- They are seniors Reagan Calcari (St. Louis, Mo.), Gigi Fay (Lancaster, Mass.), captain Lindsay Lee (Eindhoven, Netherlands), Lily Rothwell (Lynnfield, Mass.), Mari Shea (Hampstead, N.H.) and Olivia Watson (Easton, Pa).; and grad students Glidden and Woods.
UNH NOTEBOOK
- Woods recorded her third shutout of the season and eighth career.
- Poulakis ranks second on the team in both goals (13) and points (37); she has a team-high 11 assists.
- She has scored a goal in back-to-back games and in five of the last six with totals of six goals and three assists for 15 points in that span.
SERIES NOTEBOOK
- UNH has a 3-0 lifetime record against Columbia.
- This is the third consecutive year these teams have faced off.
- All three games have gone beyond regulation.
