DURHAM, N.H. -- The University of New Hampshire men's basketball team has announced graduate student forward Jaxson Baker (Phoenix, Ariz.), grad student guard Matt Herasme (Chester, N.Y.) and junior guard Nick Johnson (Bronx, N.Y.) as team captains for the 2022-23 season, the announcement was made by 18th year UNH head coach Bill Herrion on Wednesday morning.
"We are really excited to name Nick, Matt and Jaxson as our captains for the 2022-23 season," mentioned Herrion. "Nick Johnson is our most experienced player here at UNH and is going into his 4th season. He has been a two-year starter for us, was the former Rookie of the Year in America East, and has played a lot of minutes for us in a UNH uniform."
Baker played the last three seasons at Central Arkansas in the ASun Conference, playing in 85 career games with 42 career starts and 1,771 minutes played. He posted 496 career points (5.8 ppg), 219 rebounds (2.6 rpg), 104 assists and 109 three-point field goals in his career with the Bears. In 2019-20, Baker registered 7.1 ppg, 3.4 rpg and 45 made three-point baskets (34.1%).
Herasme played the last four seasons at Marist College in Poughkeepsie, N.Y. The guard played in 106 career games for the Red Foxes with 71 starts and 2,872 minutes played in his Marist career with 588 points (5.5 ppg) and 458 rebounds (4.3 rpg) with a 48.2% field goal percentage.
"Matt was a two-year captain at Marist and will bring to our team an older, experienced player that has played a lot of games at the Div. I level," commented Herrion. "Jaxson was a four-year player at Central Arkansas and was a captain as well his senior year."
Johnson averaged 28 minutes for the Wildcats last season, posting 8.6 points per game with a 48.4% field goal percentage and averaged 4.3 rebounds per contest. He totaled 10+ points in 13 of 28 games in his sophomore campaign.
"These three players bring tremendous experience and veteran leadership to this year's team," said Herrion. "These three student-athletes will do a terrific job leading this team".
