'Cats roll past NJIT on the road, 83-55 in AE play

NEWARK, N.J. – Sophomore guard Nick Johnson (Bronx, N.Y.) scored 17 points and senior forward Jayden Martinez (Cibolo, Texas) added 16 to lead a balanced attack as the University of New Hampshire men's basketball team rolled past NJIT, 83-55, in a critical America East road contest Wednesday night.
The Wildcats improved to 13-12 overall and evened their league record at 8-8 to stay in the hunt for a home game in the tournament quarterfinals.
NJIT is 11-15 overall and 6-10 in the league.
UNH came up with perhaps its best offensive performance of the season to avenge a home loss to NJIT (60-55 on Feb. 9)
The Wildcats return to Lundholm Gymnasium on Saturday at noon to celebrate Senior Day and Alumni Day with their final regular season home game of the year against Binghamton.
UNH closes out the regular season with a game at UMass Lowell on Tuesday at 7 p.m. in the Tsongas Center.
America East quarterfinal games will be played on Sunday, March 6. The top four teams in the final league standings will host the quarterfinal games.

Johnson made all seven of his two-point field goal attempts and all three of his foul shots and also blocked three shots and had three steals.
He and Martinez led five Wildcats in double figures.
Sophomore guard Marco Foster (Chicago, Ill.) had five three-pointers for 15 points and also had five assists. Senior forward Nick Guadarrama (Newington, Conn.) had 14 points and six rebounds and made all four of his free throws. Sophomore guard Blondeau Tchoukuiegno (Montreal, Que.) had 13 points with six rebounds and five assists.
UNH's previous high in points in a league game was 77 and the team's high for a game against a Division 1 opponent is 84.
The Wildcats made 30 of their 54 field goals for a season's best percentage of 55.6 percent. They made 14 of their 32 three-point shots (43.8 percent.) The 14 treys were their best for the season against a Division 1 team.
UNH had 18 assists on its 30 baskets and had eight turnovers for the game. The Wildcats outrebounded NJIT, 32-26, and had a 21-9 edge in points off the bench.
