DURHAM, N.H. -- The University of New Hampshire women's track and field team had a strong showing in a dual meet vs. UMass Lowell on Saturday afternoon at Paul Sweet Oval.
Meline Almasian (Westford, Mass.) opened the day with a victory in the 55 meter dash at 7.33, while sophomore Elizabeth Martell (Essex River Junction, Vt.) took home first-place in the 400 meters at 58.95.
"We are happy with the way the season is progressing and we are really looking forward to the conference meet coming up," said UNH head coach Robert Hoppler. "The purpose of this meet was to get some performances, final tune-ups and improve our seed marks and positioning for the championship meet and I feel like we accomplished those things. We had a very strong day on the women's side with Mel Almasian continuing her strong season and our middle distance runners performing well."
Cailey Archer's (Berthoud, Colo.) mark of 1:19.93 in the 500 meters was good for the top spot, while freshman Lily Doody (Lee, N.H.) added a first-place finish in the 1000 meters (3:04.73). Sophomore Violet Sullivan (Brentwood, N.H.) added a victory in the 3000 meter race at 10:47.04.
Sophomore Danielle Heine (Waverly, Pa.) set a new personal record with a jump of 12'0" in the pole vault, while junior Savannah Vartabedian (Wilbraham, Mass.) took first-place in the long jump at 16'6.5. Freshman Abby Chorches (East Falmouth, Mass.) finished the day with a throw of 48' 3.5 in the weight throw.
"It's always great to home a home meet, we have a lot of support from the community at the Paul Sweet Oval," said Hoppler. "It was great to see a lot of people out there supporting New Hampshire Track & Field.
The Wildcats return to action on Friday, February 25 on opening day of the the America East Indoor Championships at the BU Track & Tennis Center in Boston.
