Gibbs was a two-time America East All-Conference selection for the Wildcats
DURHAM, N.H. -- The University of New Hampshire men's basketball program has announced the hiring of Tyrece Gibbs '09 as assistant coach, the announcement was made on Thursday afternoon by head coach Bill Herrion.
Gibbs most recently has served as the head coach at Berwick Academy in South Berwick, Maine for the last four seasons. He has also coached with the New Hampshire Spartans AAU program. Gibbs was the 2017 EIL Coach of the Year and his teams reached the NEPSAC Tournament every year he coached at Berwick Academy, which includes the top eight teams in New England - Class-C.
"We're really excited to have Tyrece join our coaching staff here at UNH," said Herrion. "I've always felt that hiring former players is a real positive. They know the system, they understand the things that we demand from the players in practice and they just know the way that we do things in our program. Tyrece had a terrific playing career here at UNH and has been a very successful coach at Berwick Academy and with his local AAU team on the Seacoast. He's going to be a great addition to our staff as we continue to chase our goal of winning an America East Championship."
Gibbs, who is a Brockton, Mass. native, was a Second-Team All-Conference America East selection in 2008-09 and an America East All-Conference Third Team honoree in 2007-08. The guard played four seasons for the Wildcats (2005-2009) and ranks eighth all-time in program history in points (1,329), field goal attempts (1,125) and three-point field goal percentage (39.4). His 233 three-point field goals made rank third all-time in team history, while his 592 three-point field goal attempts, 60 blocks and 3,711 minutes played all rank fifth in the Wildcat history books.
"I am excited to be back home and join Coach Herrion's staff at UNH," mentioned Gibbs. "This is where I belong and there's no better person to learn and grow under then Coach Herrion. It's the place where it all started for me. I'm thankful and humbled to accept this great opportunity. I look forward to helping push this program to great success."
The Wildcats open their season on Monday, November 7 against Brandeis. Game time from Lundholm Gymnasium is 7:30 p.m.
