McAteer Records Two Defensive Saves in 3-0 Loss to Stanford

DURHAM, N.H. – Senior goalkeeper Jemma Woods (Frimley, England) made six saves and classmate Molly McAteer (Annapolis, Md.) was credited with two defensive saves, but the University of New Hampshire field hockey team was defeated 3-0 by Stanford University in Sunday's regular-season finale at Memorial Field.
Despite the loss, UNH advances to the 2022 America East Championships as the sixth seed and will play No. 3 UMass Lowell in a Nov. 3 (3 p.m.) quarterfinal at the University of Maine.
Lynn Vanderstichele, Cara Sambeth and Bella Ganocy each scored a goal for Stanford. Kendall Dowd and Daisy Ford combined for the shutout. Dowd earned the win despite not facing a shot in the first half; Ford entered at the start of the third quarter and was credited with two saves.
UNH is now 9-9 overall and 3-5 in America East. Stanford improves to 8-8, 4-4.

- Neither team recorded a shot on goal through 15 minutes. Stanford attempted three shots and earned one penalty corner.
- Woods made four of her six saves in the quarter to keep the game close.
- The Cardinal scored 63 seconds into the second quarter to take a 1-0 lead. Deep on the left side of the circle, Vanderstichele corralled Tottie Taylor's entry pass and fired a low, hard shot into the cage.
- In the 20th minute, Winter Rose's rising shot from the left side eluded Woods but McAteer batted the ball out of the air to keep the Wildcats within a goal.
- Stanford struck early and late in the third quarter to push the advantage to 3-0.
- The Cardinal converted their fifth corner of the game into a goal and 2-0 lead at 33:38. The battery of Taylor and Fenella Scutt set up the direct shot and goal by Sambeth.
- On another Stanford corner, Sambeth's direct shot went past Woods' outsretched left leg, by McAteer swept the ball off the goal line for the defensive save at 43:16.
- Ganocy's redirection of Scutt's centering pass made it 3-0 at 44:03.
- UNH generated its first corner at 44:47. The direct shot off the stick of freshman Tamera Cookman (Woking, England) was blocked by led to another corner. Cookman's shot on that setup got through the defense but was saved by Ford.
- UNH recorded the lone shot and only two corners in the fourth quarter.
- The 'Cats earned a corner with five minutes remaining. Instead of taking the direct shot, Cookman fed a pass to the left doorstep for senior Jaiden Wittel (Stroudsburg, Pa.), who had inserted the ball into play. Wittel swept a low, hard shot toward the near post but Ford made the save.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
- Stanford finished with the edge in shots (18-4), shots on goal (11-2) and penalty corners (8-4).
- McAteer matched her career high of two defensive saves that she established earlier this season at Maine (Sept. 23).
- She has recorded all six of UNH's defensive saves this season.
- McAteer entered the weekend ranked No. 8 in the nation with four.
- Prior to the game, UNH honored its six seniors: McAteer, Wittel, Woods, Leah Glidden (Kittery, Maine), Ava Mariani (Easton, Pa.) and Juliane Ohmen (Bremen, Germany).
- The winner of Thursday's America East quarterfinal advances to play No. 2 UAlbany on Nov. 4 (3 p.m.).
- The conference title game is Nov. 6 at 12 p.m.
- New Hampshire has a 4-7 lifetime record against Stanford.
