Rothwell Records Goal, Assist in 4-3 Overtime Loss to UC Davis

DURHAM, N.H. – Sophomore Lily Rothwell (Lynnfield, Mass.) recorded a goal and an assist for the University of New Hampshire field hockey team against UC Davis on Sunday afternoon at Memorial Field, but the Aggies won 4-3 in overtime.
Freshman Ava Clarke (Wellesley, Mass.) and redshirt senior Bloem van den Brekel (Eindhoven, Netherlands) scored the two other goals for the Wildcats. Goalkeeper Jemma Woods was credited with two saves.
Maddie Kellner scored the game-winning goal at 66:32 to lift UC Davis to victory. Izzy Tedrow, Shea Gavin, and Madison Theodore scored the other three goals for the visitors and goalie Kalli Wagnon recorded five saves.
UNH falls to 2-7 overall and 0-2 in America East, and UC Davis moves to 5-4, 1-1.

LOOKING AHEAD
- The Wildcats return to action Oct. 1 (7 p.m.) at UMass Lowell.
- New Hampshire's next home game is Oct. 15 (2 p.m.) vs. Monmouth University.
FIRST QUARTER
- UC Davis put the pressure on early, dominated possession for most of the first quarter and held a 2-0 shot advantage through 15 minutes.
- In the fifth minute, UC Davis earned a corner that led to the first goal of the game. Tedrow scored on a redirected shot from the middle of the circle to give the Aggies a 1-0 advantage at 4:57. Theodore's initial shot from the top of the circle was redirected by Tedrow.
SECOND QUARTER
- The second quarter was full of action with a total of three goals, two from UNH to level the score at 2-2.
- Coming off a corner, van den Brekel scored on a direct shot from the top of the circle to even the score 1-1 at 23:05. The battery of sophomore Lindsay Lee (Eindhoven, Netherlands) and senior Tori Palumbo (Ayer, Mass.) set up the tally.
- Moments later, Theodore scored on a shot close from the left side of the cage to give UC Davis a 2-1 advantage at 23:43
- Rothwell, with a centering pass from the right side, had an assist to Clarke, who scored her first career goal at 26:20 to tie the game at 2-2.
- UC Davis had a 5-3 shot advantage at halftime with a 3-1 edge in shots on goal and 2-1 advantage in corners.
THIRD QUARTER
- The shots were even, 3-3, in the third quarter to bring the game total to 8-6 in favor of UC Davis.
- The Aggies had a 3-2 edge in corners, but none led to a goal in the scoreless quarter.
FOURTH QUARTER
- UNH dominated the latter part of the fourth quarter, controlled a majority of the possession, and had the edge in both shots (6-1) and corners (4-0).
- Junior Ava Mariani (Easton, Pa.) stole the ball at midfield to generate a breakaway. She recorded an assist when she pulled the ball around Wagnon to the right side and found Rothwell alone in front of the cage for a goal at 53:28 to give UNH a 3-2 lead.
- Gavin scored a late goal in the final two minutes for UC Davis right in front of the cage at 58:13 to tie the game at 3-3.
- Neither team recorded a shot the remainder of regulation.
OVERTIME
- Kellner took a shot that deflected off the stick of two Wildcats into the cage to win the game, 4-3, at 66:32.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
- UNH finished the game with a 13-11 shot advantage as well as holding a 7-5 edge in penalty corners.
- van den Brekel led all players with five shots, three of which were on goal.
UNH NOTEBOOK
- Three of UNH's last four games have gone into overtime. The 'Cats defeated Bryant University, 2-1 in double OT (Sept. 17), and lost 4-3 in overtime to third-ranked Boston College (Sept. 19).
- Clarke scored her first career goal for her first points.
- van den Brekel has a team-high four goals and also leads the team with eight points and 34 shots.
- Rothwell scored her second goal of the season and finished with a personal-best three points.
- With her assist, Lee now has a team-high three this season.
- van den Brekel and Woods are the two Wildcats who have played every minute this season.
SERIES NOTEBOOK
- UNH has a 2-1 lifetime record against UC Davis.
- The Wildcats won each of the previous matchups by a score of 2-0.
