DURHAM, N.H. – The University of New Hampshire basketball team, in conjunction with America East, announced the 2021-22 season on Wednesday. The Wildcats tip off the season Nov. 9 at home against St. Joseph's College (Maine) before traveling to play Big East opponents Marquette and Providence.
"We're always excited when our new schedule comes out," UNH head coach Bill Herrion said. "I've always been a firm believer being a New England college basketball person for many, many years that in our non-conference schedule we try to keep it as regional as possible.
"We're also gonna go to Marquette and we're playing at Providence, two Big East teams," Herrion continued. "Our fans will be able to come down and see us at Providence because it's close by."
UNH's regular season begins Tuesday, Nov. 9 against St. Joseph's and it is the first of four non-conference home games. The Wildcats then travel to play Marquette (Nov. 12) and Providence (Nov. 18) before the next home game Nov. 23 against Quinnipiac University.
New Hampshire is at College of the Holy Cross on Thanksgiving weekend (Nov. 27).
December begins with a Dec. 4 home matchup vs. Central Connecticut State University and then the 'Cats are back on the road, this time to Pittsburgh to play Duquesne University on Dec. 11.
UNH plays Nov. 13 vs. Keene State College before its break for fall semester final exams. The season resumes and non-conference slate concludes Dec. 29 at intrastate rival Dartmouth College.
"We tell our guys this all the time: at the end of the day, it really comes down to what we do in league play," Herrion explained. "We're a one-bid league, so it's how we play in March in our conference tournament at the end of the year. But I think the competitive non-conference schedule absolutely gets you ready for conference play."
The Wildcats tip off the America East portion of the schedule when they welcome defending regular-season champion UMBC to Lundholm Gym on Jan. 2. The 'Cats then travel to the University of Vermont (Jan. 5) before playing host to both UAlbany (Jan. 8) and University of Maine (Jan. 12).
UNH's other home games in January are against UMass Lowell (Jan. 22) and Stony Brook University (Jan. 29).
February opens at home against tournament champion University of Hartford on Feb. 2. The 'Cats then wrap up the season series against UMBC with a Feb. 5 road game before playing their first meetings against both NJIT (Feb. 9 at Lundholm Gym) and Binghamton University (Feb. 12 on the road).
The remaining regular-season home games are Feb. 16 against Vermont and Feb. 26 vs. Binghamton. The regular-season finale is March 1 at UMass Lowell.
"America East is always tough," Herrion said. "It's a really, really competitive league with good coaches. At the end of the day, it comes down to three days in March and the goal with conference play is to win every game you can and try to finish as high as you can with home court for highest seed in the conference tournament. And if you're playing at home, that's an advantage for you."
The America East tournament begins with March 5 quarterfinal games, followed by March 8 semifinals and the March 12 title game. All tourney games are played at the site of the higher seed.
