Wildcats in first place after strong showing on opening day of the AE Championships

LOWELL, Mass. – The University of New Hampshire women's track and field team opened the America East Outdoor Championships in first place at Cushing Field Complex on the campus of UMass Lowell on Saturday afternoon.
UNH ended the day in first place with a total of 46 points, nine points in front of second place Vermont (37) and 14 points ahead of third place UAlbany (32).
"We are in first place after day one, it's obviously a great place to be, we are excited about the day we had today," said UNH co-head coach Robert Hoppler. "We are off to a good start and are happy about the number of athletes that have qualified for the finals. Our athletes advanced very well and we are in a good position to score in day two. It was definitely more of a team effort, we got the points today because of our depth."
"The team has done a great job of following all of the rules with regards to COVID. I am very proud of them for that."
The Wildcats return to return to action on the final day of the championships on Sunday, May 2nd from Cushing Field Complex. The meet begins at 9 a.m. and will be streamed live on AmericaEast.tv.
FINALS
JAVELIN
Junior Lauren Quann (Pictou, Nova Scotia) placed fourth for the Wildcats with a throw of 132'8".
Senior Alexandra Toback (Pompton Plains, N.J.) took seventh place with a throw of 118'1", while sophomore Taylor Purcell (Danvers, Mass.) notched a 12th place finish at 94'6".

POLE VAULT
Sophomore Danielle Heine (Waverly, Pa.) paced the Wildcats in the pole vault with a jump of 11'1.75", which was good for a bronze medal in the event.
Senior Jordan Hoffman (North Chelmsford, Mass.) posted a fifth-place finish in the pole vault (11'1.75"), while freshman Sarah Morin (Portsmouth, N.H.) placed 10th (10'2").

LONG JUMP
Freshman Mia Taranko (Saco, Maine) led the 'Cats with a fifth place finish with a jump of 18'3.75", while junior Saige Tudisco (Haverhill, Mass.) was the next best UNH finisher in 10th place at 17'9.50".
Junior Savannah Vartabedian (Wilbraham, Mass.) jumped 16'9.25" for an 18th place finish for the Wildcats.

3000 METER STEEPLECHASE
Junior Lauren Dean (Gilmanton Iron Works, N.H) took fifth place in the event with a time of 11:15.62.

10,000 METERS
The Wildcats earned three of the top five finishers in the event, led by graduate student Meg Champagne (Plattsburgh, N.Y.) with a time of 37:01.79, which was good for second place, while junior Althea Devereux (Jericho, Vt.) placed third for the Wildcats with a mark of 37:09.05. Junior Jennika Mannesto (Concord, N.H.) took the fifth spot with a time of 37:22.13.
"It was nice to see them have a great race, they have spent a lot of time training together and it was great to see," commented Hoppler.
Senior Caroline Mahoney (Bedford, N.H.) also had a solid showing placing seventh with a time of 37:47.01.

HEPTATHALON
Graduate student Bosibori Mosongo (Indianapolis, Ind.) is in second place after four events in the heptathalon with 2,834 points, and three events to go tomorrow, including the long jump, javelin and the 800 meter run.

UNH earned three of 12 spots in the finals on Sunday, led by freshman Lily Doody (Lee, N.H.) with a time of 4:43.96, along with junior Nicole Yeomans (Foxborough, Mass.) at 4:48.33 and senior Cayla Barretto (Woburn, Mass.) at 4:49.36.

100 METER HURDLES
Saige Tudisco advanced to the finals tomorrow with a time of 14.78, which was the third fastest time in the qualifying trials.

Sophomore Kelly Hamlin (Ballston Lake, N.Y.) and freshman Natalie Fraser (Gilford, N.H.) both qualified for the finals tomorrow with times of 59.22 and 59.38, respectively.

Freshman Elizabeth Martell (Essex Junction, Vt.) and Silvia Caddell (Salem, N.H.) advanced to the finals on Sunday with times of 2:12.96 and 2:16.90.
