BOSTON – Jemma Woods (Frimley, England) and Rosalie Post (The Hague, Netherlands) of the University of New Hampshire field hockey team were honored by America East as Defensive Player of the Week and Rookie of the Week, respectively, on Tuesday.
The Wildcats, ranked No. 18 in the Penn-Monto/NFHCA Division I Coaches poll that was also released Tuesday, went 1-1 last week with a 2-0 loss at No. 15 Boston College and a 3-0 victory against Northeastern University.
Woods, a sophomore goalkeeper, made a career-high 10 saves at Boston College (March 12) and followed that with her first career shutout in UNH's 3-0 win against Northeastern (March 14). She went 1-1 on the week with a 1.00 GAA and .846 save percentage.
Woods was credited with one save for the shutout win. And with UNH protecting a two-goal lead four minutes into the fourth quarter, she made two key sliding stick tackles in the same sequence to deny the Huskies from recording a shot. First, she charged off the goal line to the middle of the circle and dove head first with stick extended to execute the tackle. She then had to scurry to the end line to the right of the cage and made another head-first diving tackle. Although neither was a save on the stat sheet, that sequence helped keep Northeastern scoreless.
Friday at BC, Woods stopped three shots in the first and third quarters and made two saves in both the second and fourth quarters to finish with her personal best of 10 saves. Her effort kept the Wildcats within one goal at halftime and within striking distance the full 60 minutes.
Post, a freshman back, scored her first career goal to give UNH a 1-0 lead against Northeastern and it proved to be the game-winning goal in the Wildcats' 3-0 victory at Memorial Field.
And as part of UNH's defensive unit, she helped limit Northeastern to three shots (one on goal) and two penalty corners.
The 'Cats were awarded a penalty stroke at 5:58 and Post lifted the ball into the upper-left corner. She finished with a game-high four shots (two on goal) in 55 minutes. In Friday's game at BC, Post had two shots (one on goal).
It is the first ever weekly conference award for both Woods and Post. A Wildcat has received both the Defensive Player of the Week and Rookie of the Week awards twice this season; redshirt freshman goalie Nikki Tredwell (Hampton, N.H.) received both accolades in Week 1. The 'Cats also have two Offensive Player of the Week honors this season; junior forward Finn Caron (Hampton, N.H.) was the recipient in Week 1 and Week 2.
New Hampshire (3-1) is scheduled to play a pair of conference home games this weekend – March 19 (3 p.m.) vs. UAlbany and March 21 (1 p.m.) against UC Davis.
